Job Description:
We are looking for reliable competent Caregivers to help provide shift coverage for both our Utica, NY and Rome, NY locations. .
Caring for our terminally ill guests in a professional and compassionate manner is essential.
Healthcare experience preferred but not required.
All training is provided.
Must be over the age of 18 by NYS law.
Job Summary:
Surrogate Caregivers provide direct personal care to Abraham House’s terminally ill guests consistent with Abraham House’s policies and procedures.
Essential Responsibilities and Duties for Surrogate Caregivers:
- Participate in orientation, training and ongoing professional development as needed to ensure best standards of practice for care giving and ensures understanding and adherence to Abraham House’s procedures.
- Ensures needed care is provided for our guest’s ultimate comfort, dignity and care.
- Arrive timely for shifts and notifies in a timely manner whenever unable to keep a scheduled shift.
- Administer medications according to the Medication Administration Policy & Procedure.
- Consult with the CEO & COO as needed in regard to daily operations and guest services
- Serve as liaison between Hospice & Palliative Care, Inc. (HPCI) and guests as appropriate. Contacts HPCI as appropriate when there are changes in guest’s symptoms or questions regarding care.
- Document appropriately and timely in guest journals.
- Ensure light meals/snacks are provided as appropriate to the guests.
- Provide direct care relating to guest health and hygiene.
- Establish positive working relationships with paid and volunteer surrogate caregivers, administration and the public.
- Provide appropriate emotional support to guests and families.
- Interact with community based individuals in a sensitive and professional manner.
- Perform additional related duties and responsibilities as required.
Education, Training and Experience for Surrogate Caregivers:
Since Abraham House is based on a model of a family caring for a loved one at home, there is no license that is required to be a surrogate caregiver. Previous healthcare experience is helpful but not required. A surrogate caregiver must demonstrate to the satisfaction of the CEO, COO and Trainers the ability to provide care for guests.
Additional Qualifications, Special Skills, & Other Requirements for Surrogate Caregivers:
- Ability to work effectively with terminally ill guests and their families.
- Manage multiple tasks, noise, interruptions, stress, and emotional loss.
- Work well independently, cooperatively and effectively with volunteers and other staff while maintaining a professional demeanor.
- Maintain a commitment to the Abraham House mission.
- Maintain high standards of confidentiality including all HIPAA standards.
- Must have excellent communication, listening, documentation and telephone skills.
- Must have an understanding of a variety of cultural, ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds and an ability to execute a supportive and sensitive approach to guest’s and family needs.
- Health status is consistent with the ability to meet job requirements. There must be no physical or mental handicap which would interfere with the proper performance of duties.
Occupational exposures, hazards, work environment:
All surrogate caregiver paid time will be within Abraham House homes. Has exposure to terminally ill guests, periods of stress, variable activities, and variable acuity of work load, flexible hours, lifting, occasional step climbing and use of telephone.
Supervision Received and Exercised for Surrogate Caregivers:
- Receives general supervision from CEO, COO and Caregiver Trainers.
