The North Regional Division (NRD) provides project development, technical design, and design oversight for projects in District Four (4) and District Five (5). Working alongside the New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) General Office and Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) personnel, the NRD advances NMDOT projects through both internal design efforts and consultant oversight. The NRD also provides oversight on local agency projects that use federal funding for design and construction activities. The North Region Division is based out of the Santa Fe NMDOT General Office and is comprised of professional engineers, technicians, and administrative support staff.
As a valued new employee to NMDOT, you may be eligible to received three (3) days of administrative leave upon your start date. This is applicable to external hires not within the State of New Mexico Government.
Why does the job exist?
Under general supervision, this position performs difficult and complex technical assignments and provides mentoring and direction to Engineering Technicians engaged in sub-professional engineering work. This position also carries out the duties of a senior designer on a North Region Design squad. This position works on design drawings and calculations for highway construction projects using computer drafting software. This position also works on other tasks as assigned by the team supervisor.
How does it get done?
The primary responsibilities of this position will include:
- Performing work such as highly complex vocational level data gathering and performing highly complex analysis and interpretation of data.
- Acting as lead computer aided draft (CAD) technician to develop and maintain CAD drafting standards and procedures.
- Preparing design drawings and drawing bid sets from engineering sketches, oral instructions, field measurements, historical records or maps.
- Customer interaction, which may be in the field or in an office setting, in the performance of duties.
- May act as head technician to develop and maintain electronic document management system standards procedures.
- Providing training and assistance to District staff as needed.
- May provide work direction to incumbents at lower levels and review/audit the work in this job family.
- Performing quality assurance/quality control of data and project submittals.
- May train lower-level Engineering Technicians in overall duties.

Minimum Qualification
High School Diploma or equivalent and six (6) years of relevant experience. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling six (6) years may substitute for the required experience.
Employment Requirements
Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive a Defensive Driving Course certificate as a condition of continued employment.
Employment requires successful completion of a pre-employment physical exam and is conditional pending results.
Business Reference check and Driver's License verification are required, and employment is conditional pending results.
Working Conditions
Work is generally performed in an office setting with field work in varying weather conditions on multiple projects. Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT), extensive personal computer and phone usage. Sitting/standing/driving for extended periods of time. Communication with the general public and public agencies on a frequent basis. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds. Occasional extended hours and statewide / out of state travel maybe required.
