This is professional work involving the responsibility for completing specific phases of community planning projects within the Town. Duties are performed under the general supervision of the Director of Planning or higher level ranking administrator or Department Head with considerable leeway allowed in carrying out the professional details of the task. Incumbents work independently in gathering information and conducting statistical studies in their particular phase of the project. Supervision is exercised over a small size staff. This class is distinguished from Planner in the greater responsibility for specific elements of major studies. Performs related work as required.
Plans and executes specific phases of community planning projects;
Plans and conducts research on planning and development problems;
Prepares and supervises the preparation of variety of planning statistics, data plans, designs, charts, records and reports;
Prepares and supervises the preparation of special studies in such areas as land development and community facilities;
Plans and conducts field studies and surveys;
Plans and prepares charts, maps, and narrative reports;
Occasionally represents the planning department at conferences of local government officials;
Conducts community surveys to determine and project local planning needs;
Performs miscellaneous office work and maintains records of planning unit activities.
Good knowledge of the purposes, principles, terminology and procedures involved in community planning; good knowledge of current methods for collecting, analyzing and interpreting statistical data; good knowledge of zoning and subdivision process; ability to plan and conduct planning surveys and studies; ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions; ability to work without close supervision; ability to establish and maintain harmonious relations with co-workers and the general public; physical conditioning commensurate with the demands of the position.
(a) Master’s Degree in Architecture, Planning, Landscaping Architecture, Engineering, or related field and one year of experience in community planning; OR
(b) Bachelor’s Degree in Planning, Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Engineering, or related field and three years of experience in community planning; OR
(c) An equivalent combination of training and experience as indicated in (a) or (b).
