Hummer Turfgrass Systems is a leader in natural grass sports field construction and maintenance throughout the Mid-Atlantic. For 54 years, we have partnered with schools, universities, municipalities, professional sports organizations, and golf clubs to build and maintain some of the region's finest natural grass playing surfaces.
Together with our sister company, Sporting Valley Turf Farms, which is a wholesale/retail sod farming operation, we operate two businesses that have been serving the region with high quality products and services for a combined 100 years. What You’ll Do:
The Controller is a key member of the executive leadership team and is responsible for the financial leadership of Hummer Turfgrass Systems and Sporting Valley Turf Farms. This position owns the financial operations— from day-to-day bookkeeping accuracy through final financial statement issuance. This role ensures the integrity of the company's financial reporting, owns construction accounting and certified payroll compliance end to end, and leads the systems and process improvements that support continued growth. As a key member of the executive team, this position will be a part of helping the companies continue their growth paths through strategic thought and analysis.
Duties & Responsibilities
Financial Leadership
- Serve as a trusted partner to the President and leadership team by providing timely financial insights, identifying business risks, and recommending opportunities to improve business performance.
- Oversee all accounting operations including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, fixed assets, and month-end/year-end close.
- Prepare accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
- Lead the annual budgeting, forecasting, and cash flow management processes.
- Manage banking relationships, cash management, and line of credit reporting.
- Ensure compliance with GAAP, lender covenants, and internal financial controls.
- Analyze financial performance across business units and divisions as well as provide recommendations to improve profitability, cash flow, and operational efficiency.
- Develop and maintain financial dashboards and key performance indicators (KPIs) to support operational decision-making.
- Establish and maintain accounting policies, financial controls and governance process.
Construction & Project Accounting
- Own job costing, work-in-progress (WIP) schedules, percentage-of-completion accounting, and project financial reporting.
- Own certified payroll compliance, including prevailing wage rate methodology
- Monitor project costs, labor reporting, subcontractor expenses, and contract billing.
- Support progress billing, retainage tracking, lien waivers, and construction contract administration.
- Assist operational managers in understanding project financial performance and profitability.
Administration & Risk Management
- Assist President with insurance renewals, workers' compensation reporting, bonding requirements, and risk management activities.
- Partner with office administration on payroll and 401k benefits
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local payroll and tax reporting requirements.
Leadership & Process Improvement
- Supervise, mentor, and develop accounting and payroll staff.
- Lead accounting systems conversions and implementations (ADP, Ramp, etc.)
- Develop and improve accounting systems, reporting tools, internal controls, and financial processes.
· Build strong relationships across accounting, operations, and leadership to improve collaboration and support sound business decision-making.
· Identify opportunities to leverage emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), to improve reporting, decision-making, operational efficiency, and administrative processes.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- 8+ years of progressive accounting experience, with construction or project-based accounting experience required.
- Strong understanding of construction accounting principles including job costing, WIP reporting, and percentage-of-completion accounting.
- Experience with accounting, expense management and payroll software systems such as QuickBooks Online, Ramp and ADP payroll or similar platforms.
- Experience working with privately held businesses and collaborating directly with ownership and senior leadership.
· Demonstrated experience leading system conversions and process improvement initiatives
- Strong analytical, organizational, communication, and leadership skills.
Preferred Experience
- CPA designation preferred but not required.
- Construction contract management and progress billing.
- Financial modeling, forecasting, and operational analysis.
- Experience leading accounting teams within a growing construction or service-based business.
- Experience implementing or improving accounting systems and business processes.
