Firefighter / Paramedic
**Successful candidates with five or more years of qualifying, full time, fire service experience will start at the top of the pay scale**
Position Summary
Firefighter/Paramedic performs technical duties and responds to fire alarms, medical emergencies, emergency rescue, hazardous materials incidents, fire investigation, fire inspection, and other calls to protect life and property. Firefighter/Paramedic participates in fire prevention, training, and station and equipment maintenance activities. The expectation that a high degree of judgement and initiative while making critical fire and life safety related decisions under high pressure and/or adverse conditions. This job classification reports to and receives guidance and mentoring from the supervisor on the shift.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Essential duties are critical or fundamental to the performance of the job. They are the major functions for which the person in the job is held accountable. The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:
· Critical thinking and problem-solving skills and the application of independent judgement and sound decision-making abilities.
· Knowledge of modern firefighting and EMS methods and principles, equipment and applicable operations, and firefighter personal protective equipment.
· Respond to emergencies and calls for assistance.
· Participate in firefighting and/or rescue operations.
· Assess nature and extent of illness or injury to establish and prioritize medical procedures to be followed or need for additional assistance.
· Observe, record, and report to physician and other EMS team members the patient’s condition and response to drugs and other treatment modalities.
· Participate in salvage and overhaul operations.
· Respond to and take appropriate action at hazardous materials incidents; direct and/or participate in the rendering of medical care at an emergency incident.
· Participate in drills for fire department personnel in assigned duties, including firefighting, medical care, hazardous materials response, fire prevention, and related subjects.
· Complete work assignments on assigned company/shift/station; ensure that all decisions and actions are consistent with department policies, procedures, and emerging priorities. Complete duties related to program management to ensure project and program deadlines and milestones are met.
· Perform scheduled inspection of facilities, equipment, and apparatus to ensure.
· Clean and maintain facilities, grounds, quarters, equipment, and apparatus at the fire stations.
· Ensure appropriate written and oral communication takes place to transfer responsibilities and current priorities from one shift and/or crew to another.
· Assist in developing recommendations and implementing new programs, policies and procedures that are focused on quality and productivity improvements.
· Attend technical skills training and continuing education courses as needed to maintain technical and leadership skills and certifications. Demonstrate the ability to read, write and comprehend these and other related materials.
· Complete incident reports accurately and completely. Attend crew/shift safety meetings as necessary.
· Ensure compliance with department standards concerning uniforms, emergency gear, tools and equipment, grooming, and other related items.
· Perform related duties as assigned. Demonstrates courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with elected officials, public, and staff; acts in a manner that promotes a harmonious and effective workplace environment.
· At times may be required to work outside normal business hours and work extended hours to accomplish requirements of the position.
Required Qualifications
· High School Diploma, GED
· Valid Driver’s license
· Missouri Emergency Medical Technician – Paramedic License (EMT-P)
· Advanced Cardiac Life Support Certifications (ACLS)
· AHA – CPR Certification

Physical Demands and Work Environment

Mobility to climb ladders and work at considerable heights; fight fires wearing an air pack and protective equipment weighing 58 pounds; use power driven tools; standing for extended periods of time, stooping, kneeling and walking on uneven terrain at fire scenes and uneven terrain, climbing ladders, scaffolding and stairs; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen, and hearing and speech to communicate in person or over the telephone; hear fire alarms, speakers, horns, and bells; regularly lift and carry up to 100 pounds.
Work is subject to performance under adverse environmental conditions in life threatening environments; exposure to bodily fluids, solvents, chemicals, fumes, smoke, electrical current and other hazardous substances.

· Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support Certification within one year of employment
· Pediatric Advanced Life Support Certification within one year of employment
· Valid driver’s license
· Obtain and maintain car seat installation certification within two years of employment
· Pass district operator / engineer testing for all apparatus within five years
· Haz Mat Tech Certification within 5 years
· Rescue Tech Certifications as determined by the district
· Adequate physical / medical condition to perform all aspects of employment classification as determined by mandatory annual medical and / or physical evaluations.
· Perform in accordance with the rules, standard of operating guidelines, polices, medical control protocols and collective bargaining agreement.

Pay: $66,474.72 - $89,790.48 per year
