POSITION OVERVIEW: AE Works is seeking an experienced Director of Finance to lead the firm's day to day financial operations and provide clear, accurate, and timely financial information to company leadership. This role is responsible for ensuring strong financial discipline across the organization, including cash management, accounting and financial reporting, forecasting, budgeting, project financial management, internal controls, and compliance. The Director of Finance must be comfortable operating at all levels of the organization. This person will lead the finance team while also being willing to work directly in the details to understand project economics, improve processes, and ensure leadership has an accurate picture of financial performance. The successful candidate will be a strong partner to the CEO, COO, and other members of leadership, translating financial information into better operating decisions.
LOCATION: Pittsburgh, PA (PREFERRED) or Washington DC
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Lead the day-to-day finance and accounting function and manage the finance team.
- Ensure accurate, timely financial reporting, strong controls, and clear accountability across the function.
- Work with the CEO, COO, and operating leaders to provide practical financial insight and resolve issues.
- Own short- and medium-term cash forecasting and provide leadership with clear visibility into the company's cash position.
- Lead company forecasting, budgeting, and financial performance reporting.
- Own the month-end close process and ensure financial statements are accurate, complete, and current.
- Maintain strong visibility into project financial performance, including backlog, revenue, margin, billing, collections, and forecast accuracy.
- Improve the quality and accessibility of financial information.
- Ensure appropriate financial controls and FAR compliance for federal work.
QUALIFICATIONS:
What’s Required:
- Bachelor's degree in business, accounting, finance, economics or a related field.
- 10 or more years of progressive accounting and finance experience.
- Experience leading an accounting or finance function or team.
- Strong accounting fundamentals and demonstrated experience producing accurate financial statements.
- Experience with cash forecasting, working capital management, budgeting, and financial forecasting.
- Experience in a professional services or project based business, preferably within architecture, engineering, construction, consulting, or government contracting.
- Ability and willingness to work directly in the details while also providing useful financial guidance to senior leadership.
- Strong analytical skills and demonstrated ability to identify issues, investigate root causes, and drive resolution.
- Experience with ERP and accounting systems. Unanet experience is strongly preferred.
What Puts You Ahead:
- CPA or CMA certification.
- Significant AEC or professional services finance experience.
- Experience with project accounting, project profitability, backlog forecasting, and revenue recognition.
- Working knowledge of FAR requirements and indirect cost rate development.
- Experience with federal government contracting.
- M&A due diligence or integration experience.
- Experience managing finances across multiple affiliated entities or LLCs.
