Job Overview
The Caregiver (Direct Support Professional) provides compassionate, person-centered care and supervision to adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities residing in a Level 6 Adult Residential Facility (ARF). Working under the direction of the House Manager and Administrator, the caregiver assists residents with activities of daily living (ADLs), medication assistance (as authorized), behavioral support, community integration, and implementation of each resident's Individual Program Plan (IPP), Individual Service Plan (ISP), and Behavior Support Plan (BSP).
The Caregiver is responsible for promoting resident independence, dignity, choice, and quality of life while ensuring a safe, supportive, and respectful living environment. This position requires the ability to respond effectively to behavioral challenges, medical emergencies, and crisis situations while complying with Community Care Licensing (CCL), California Department of Social Services (CDSS), Title 17, Title 22, San Diego Regional Center (SDRC) requirements, and all facility policies and procedures.
Job Duties and Responsibilities
- Must be able to speak, read, write, and understand English proficiently to communicate effectively with residents, coworkers, healthcare professionals, emergency personnel, and regulatory agencies.
- Provide direct care and supervision to residents in accordance with their IPP, ISP, BSP, physician orders, and facility policies.
- Assist residents with activities of daily living (ADLs), including bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, personal hygiene, eating, mobility, and other personal care needs while encouraging independence.
- Administer or assist with medications as trained and authorized, following physician orders, medication administration procedures, and applicable California regulations.
- Observe residents for changes in physical, emotional, behavioral, or medical condition and immediately report concerns to the House Manager, Administrator, nurse, physician, or other appropriate personnel.
- Implement approved Behavior Support Plans (BSPs) and positive behavior support strategies using trauma-informed and person-centered approaches.
- Maintain continuous supervision to ensure the health, safety, welfare, rights, and dignity of all residents.
- Support residents in developing daily living, communication, socialization, self-help, and independent living skills.
- Assist residents with meal preparation, feeding when necessary, and encourage healthy nutrition based on individual dietary needs.
- Escort or transport residents to medical appointments, day programs, recreational activities, community outings, educational programs, and other scheduled services.
- Maintain a clean, safe, organized, and sanitary home environment by performing housekeeping, laundry, infection control, and sanitation duties.
- Complete accurate and timely documentation, including daily progress notes, communication logs, medication administration records (MAR), behavior tracking, incident reports, and other required records.
- Participate in resident assessments, IPP meetings, staff meetings, and interdisciplinary team meetings as assigned.
- Respond appropriately to emergencies, behavioral crises, fire drills, disasters, and evacuation procedures in accordance with the facility's emergency preparedness plan.
- Protect resident rights, privacy, confidentiality, and personal dignity while maintaining compliance with HIPAA and applicable California regulations.
- Maintain professional communication with residents, families, conservators, Regional Center representatives, healthcare professionals, and coworkers.
- Follow all Community Care Licensing (CCL), California Department of Social Services (CDSS), Title 17, Title 22, OSHA, HIPAA, and facility policies and procedures.
- Complete all required orientation, annual training, continuing education, and competency evaluations.
- Immediately report incidents, injuries, medication errors, suspected abuse, neglect, exploitation, or unsafe conditions in accordance with mandated reporting requirements.
- Assist with inventory and proper storage of medications, food, household supplies, personal protective equipment (PPE), and other facility resources.
- Promote resident choice, inclusion, community participation, and meaningful activities that enhance independence and quality of life.
- Provide accurate shift-to-shift communication to ensure continuity of care.
- Maintain professionalism, ethical conduct, reliability, confidentiality, and positive working relationships at all times.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Administrator, House Manager, or other authorized supervisory personnel to ensure the safe and effective operation of the facility.
Pay: $18.00 per hour
