JOB SUMMARY:
Under limited supervision perform day-to-day safety and health program functions to support EHS Department business objectives. Ensure company compliance with all safety and health programs, including but not limited to Workplace Safety, Equipment Safety, Ergonomics, biological and physical hazards, company health and safety programs and federal, state, and local regulatory compliance (OSHA, EPA, Air Quality, DOT, APCD). Proficient in Hazard Communication and Personal Protective Equipment. Conduct periodic audits and inspections about facility health programs. Use technical expertise of Hazardous Materials/Waste, OSHA, EPA, Air Quality, DOT and Workers’ Compensation practices as well as Industrial Hygiene requirements to minimize exposure to chemical, biological and physical hazards. Communicate across a functional group matrix and collaborate for problem resolution.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES and/or RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Ensures company compliance with all local, state & federal safety regulations by developing and sustaining efforts with respect to Manufacturing Equipment Safety, Ergonomics, Hazard Communication (including Safety Data Sheets), Hearing Conservation, Respiratory Protection, Industrial Ventilation, Bloodborne Pathogens, Chemical Hygiene and Laboratory Safety programs and monthly safety audits.
- Perform or coordinate periodic audits and inspections for storm water, hazardous waste, and preparing reports for submittal to local, state, and federal environmental agencies.
- Performs and/or assist in investigating accidents and incidents to identify root cause and effective counter measures.
- Assist in Managing environmental permits such as but are not limited to the following: San Diego Air Pollution Control District (SDAPCD) permits, County of San Diego Hazardous Materials permits, and industrial wastewater permits.
- Submit Hazardous Waste pick-up inventory requests to our waste hauler and signs manifests. Help in setting up generators waste profiles as needed and managing recycling and disposal efforts.
- Provide solutions and intervention strategies to minimize exposure to chemical, biological, and physical hazards using engineering, administrative and personal protective equipment controls.
- Provides technical expertise for continual efforts to minimize exposure to chemical, biological, and physical hazards using engineering, administrative and personal protective equipment controls.
- Writes and distributes safety tailgate to company staff and manages training in support of EHS organizational programs.
- Participates as a member of the emergency response team in the event of a fire, chemical spill, medical emergencies and/or earthquakes, etc.
- Partners with regulatory agencies as a point of contact for inspections and/or audits, involving health matters, and may serve as a back-up to other EHS department personnel for other regulatory inspections or audits.
- Other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
- Bachelor’s degree in applicable Science field and 5+ years’ related experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and/or ABILITIES:
- Working knowledge of Cal/OSHA regulations and industrial hygiene concepts, methodologies, principles and instrumentation in a manufacturing environment, preferred.
- ISO 14001 working knowledge, a plus.
- Working knowledge of environmental sciences, regulatory requirements and permitting processes.
- Intermediate to Advanced Microsoft Office Suite software such as Excel, Outlook, Power Point, and Word as well as exposure to enterprise software.
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals. Write moderately complex reports and correspondence as well as speak effectively before groups of customers, employees, or vendors.
- Work independently as well as in a small and/or large group while fostering a cooperative spirit.
- Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations and apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in various mediums.
CERTIFICATES and/or LICENSES:
- DOT HM 181 Certification, required.
- CPR/First Aid Certification, preferred.

- Ability to move sampling or other analytical instrumentation or objects up to 50 pounds.
- Medically qualified to wear respirator.
- Work in an environment with varying temperatures, exposure to noise level up to 85 decibels, fumes and chemicals or hazardous materials while using personal protective equipment.
- Works with different instrumentation with extreme temperatures.
- Must be able to work extended hours per the demands of the business.
