Duration: 6-month Base Period + 4 Option Periods of 6 months each
Shift Schedule: 12-hour shifts, starting at 7:00 AM or 7:00 PM (Day and Night shifts available)
How Many Shifts Needed Per Month: 3 shifts one week, 4 shifts the following week = 7 shifts per 2-week period (84 hours per 2 weeks); approximately 1,040 hours per 6-month period per nurse.
Credentialing / Onboarding Time: 6 to 8 weeks (standard; background investigation and PIV card/ID issuance required prior to start)
License: Current, valid, unrestricted RN license from a U.S. state or territory
Certifications (All Required):
- Basic Life Support (BLS)
- Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)
- Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP)
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
Experience Needed: Minimum 24 months (2 years) of nursing experience, with at least 2 years specifically in Pediatric and Medical Surgical nursing
Special Skills Needed:
- Medication administration for adult and pediatric patients
- IV pump (IVACs), cardiac monitors, phototherapy, high-flow oxygen delivery
- PICC line, Port-a-cath, and central line management
- Venipuncture/phlebotomy and blood products administration
- PCA pump, Kangaroo pump, and defibrillator operation
- Chest tube and wound vac management
- Point of care glucose testing (Accu-Chek Inform II)
- IHS electronic health system proficiency (basic computer/IT skills)
- Fluent English communication (read, write, speak)
- Cultural sensitivity toward American Indian and Alaska Native communities
Responsibilities:
- Provide inpatient nursing care to pediatric and medical surgical patients
- Develop, implement, and evaluate individualized patient care plans
- Assess patients, interview families, and collaborate with physicians and care team
- Observe, document, and report patient conditions, medication responses, and treatment changes
- Respond to emergencies (Code Blue/RRT) per AHA algorithms and facility protocols
- Administer medications and perform procedures per competency standards
- Maintain HIPAA-compliant documentation and adhere to IHS IT security policies
- Complete all mandatory competency validations, orientations, and required training
- Submit accurate weekly timesheets verified by the Supervisory Clinical Nurse (SCN)
- Coordinate leave requests with SCN; provide medical documentation for absences of 3+ consecutive days
- Float to other nursing departments as needed (sitter, transport, other units)
- Wear government-issued contractor ID badge at all times during duty
