State and Local Tax Group
State & Local Indirect Tax Group:
The State & Local Indirect Tax Group is responsible for analyzing, determining, and preparing State & Local Sales and Use Tax returns. The group is responsible for determining the taxability of the property or services. The group is also responsible for identifying all locations and jurisdictions that the Company has an obligation to file Personal Property Taxes and other Indirect Taxes. Additionally, the group is responsible for handling audits, appeals and negotiations with various state tax authorities.
Position:
Jefferies’ Tax Department is expanding to support the Firm’s continued growth and diversification. The Firm seeks a highly motivated individual who will work closely with the Director of State and Local Tax and the Indirect Tax Manager to assist with tax compliance, tax examinations, research and planning.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Preparing the Firm's State Sales & Use Tax, Personal Property, and other various indirect tax filings.
- Analyzing the Firm’s sales tax transactions for purchases of Fixed Assets, Market Data, and Software, etc. using the Vertex Sales and Use Tax automation system to determine the taxability of each item.
- Preparing/reviewing detailed workpapers for the Firm’s various business units and joint ventures.
- Perform research and draft memoranda on various state sales and use tax issues.
- Assist with tax audits.
Handling various state tax notices from various tax authorities and proposing suggested responses/strategies.

Required Background:
- Significant experience in some or all the following areas: Multi-state Sales and Use tax compliance, tax research, ASC 450, and MS Excel modeling.
- Knowledgeable in Vertex Tax Software, preferable, but not required.
- Knowledgeable in RIA Checkpoint, CCH, and/or BNA.
- Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts degree in Accounting or business-related field.
- Certified Public Accountant or Enrolled Agent, preferable, but not required.
- 5-8 years of relevant work experience at a major accounting firm and/or in the Financial Services Industry.
- Ability to learn new areas and concepts quickly, and thrive in a dynamic, time-sensitive environment.
- Proven project management skills.

Primary Location: New York Full Time Salary Range of $140,000-$150,000
