Sumter County is Currently Seeking a Circulation Services Assistant for the Sumter County Library
Compensation: $12.00 Per Hour
Position Summary
The Circulation Services Assistant provides frontline customer service to library patrons and supports the daily operations of the circulation department. This position assists patrons with checking materials in and out, renewing items, placing holds, registering library accounts, collecting payments, and answering general informational questions.
The ideal candidate enjoys working with the public, demonstrates strong organizational skills, and is committed to providing excellent service to a diverse community of library users.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Provides courteous and professional customer service to library patrons.
- Checks library materials in and out and assists patrons with renewals, holds, and account maintenance.
- Registers new library users and ensures patron records are accurate and up to date.
- Collects fines, fees, and other payments in accordance with library procedures.
- Promotes library programs, services, and resources to patrons.
- Maintains book displays, including new materials and featured collections.
- Pulls reserved materials and notifies patrons when items are available.
- Assists with library programs, interlibrary loan services, and circulation-related projects.
- Performs opening, closing, and facility safety procedures.
- Assists at other library locations or service areas as needed.
- Performs related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Additional education, training, or coursework beyond high school is preferred.
- Experience providing customer service in a public-facing environment preferred.
- Experience using standard office equipment and computer software.
- Ability to learn and utilize library-specific software and systems.

Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, reach, and perform repetitive motions throughout the workday.
- Ability to lift and carry materials weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to push loaded book carts weighing more than 100 pounds.
- Ability to safely handle library materials and equipment.
Work Environment
- Work is performed primarily in a public library setting.
- Frequent interaction with patrons, staff, and community members.
- Schedule may include daytime, evening, and weekend hours.
- Work may involve occasional deadlines and periods of increased public activity.
- Regular movement throughout the library is required.
