Serenity House Impact Youth Prevention is currently hiring a full-time Prevention Specialist (PS) to make a difference in the lives of students by providing evidence-based curriculum in schools and community sites for grades Pre-K through 12th grade. Promoting prevention includes presenting topics on life skills, including goal setting; decision making; friendship; intelligence; self-esteem, and information about tobacco, alcohol, and other drugs. The goal is to provide these lessons to maximize protective factors and reduce risk factors for substance abuse. We are seeking motivated, energetic, empathic individuals to become a member of our prevention team. Must love kids and have a desire to teach. QUALIFICATIONS:
· Professional, creative, enthusiastic, motivated, team-oriented, adaptable, organized, and self-starter
· Able to effectively communicate with students and adults in the classroom, office, and at community meetings and events
· Sensitive and compassionate to participants from high-risk families or other dysfunctional environments
· Adheres to weekly, monthly, quarterly and annual deadlines, including planning ahead and managing time
· Capable of utilizing computers and other general office equipment and programs such as Microsoft Office Suite
· Complete and pass a multi-layer background check (includes FBI fingerprint check) and pass a drug screening.
JOB DESCRIPTION AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The following curricula (Too Good For Drugs K - 12th grades is 10 weeks; Positive Action K – 12th grades is 9 - 10 weeks; Project Towards No Drug Abuse 9th-12th is 6 weeks) are approved by the State of Texas to be delivered to participants in an effort to build resilience with students in schools and community sites.
The PS will manage a classroom at each school site they are scheduled to attend on a weekly basis. They will continue to attend the same classes for the entire 6-10 weeks. Curriculum will be taught with fidelity and the PS will construct the lesson from the curriculum. The PS will document all lessons taught; attendance of students; student questionnaires, as well as student and teacher evaluations. This position has a moderate level of paperwork with specific deadlines. The PS will have a high degree of communication with school counselors, teachers and prevention staff. The PS is obligated to follow Federal Confidentiality Law (42 CFR-Part 2, Federal Register) and Mandated Reporter requirements in accordance with Texas Family Code 261.101.
The PS will also attend monthly coalition meetings, where we discuss strategies for environmental change with other agencies. Collaboration with parallel agencies is vital to the success of our mission and participation in coalition activities may require work outside of the 8-5 M-F schedule. The PS must attend these meetings to fulfill the requirements of the APS certification.
EDUCATION AND TRAINING:
Degree preferred; high school diploma required.
1. Attend required curriculum training before implementing in schools (TGFD or PTND – 2 days, PA – 1 day)
2. In-house training: policies, procedures and paperwork
3. Obtain and maintain CPR and First Aid certifications
4. Prevention Specialist Training (PST) and Prevention Ethics Training within 6 months of hire
5. Substance Abuse Prevention Skills Training (SAPST) within 18 months of employment
6. Apply for Associate Prevention Specialist (APS) certification within 20 months of employment
7. Annual Advanced Training; Advanced Prevention Ethics; Annual Prevention Providers Conference
8. These trainings are required for employment and will be paid for by Serenity House.
Prior teaching/public speaking experience preferred

Salaries depend on education level and prior teaching experience $35,000 - $39,000.
