Job Title: Bus Driver Wage/Hour Status: Non-Exempt

Primary Purpose:
Responsible for providing safe, positive, orderly, timely and efficient professional transportation services for students and other authorized personnel to and from schools or other designated locations.
Qualifications:
Education/Certification:
- High school diploma or GED
- Texas CDL (B) with passenger endorsement (P) and student endorsement (S)
- TEA driver certification
- Acceptable driving record
- Ability to read, write and understand English
Special Knowledge/Skills:
- Demonstrate complete physical control and operation of school buses
- Facilitate positive student management while operating school bus
- Strong communication, public relations, organizational and interpersonal skills
- Attend FISD Special Needs Training Course when available
Requirements Unique to Position:

Major Responsibilities and Duties:
1. Provide safe, orderly, timely and efficient processional transportation services. This includes abiding by all traffic laws and safety regulations for school buses.
2. Maintain safety precautions when students are boarding and departing bus.
3. Maintain discipline and follow procedures for positive student management.
4. Based on a need to know, be proactive in learning and adapting to each student’s special medical, physical, communicative and emotional needs. Learn each student’s name and greet in a positive manner.
5. Follow time card procedures for accurately reporting time worked. Clock in and out on time for meeting morning route requirements. Clock in and out on time for meeting afternoon route requirements including leaving in assigned afternoon lineup position.
6. Follow assigned routes and adhere to established schedules. The bus driver, as the person who has the most knowledge about the route, may make temporary adjustments based on conditions such as weather, construction, etc. The
Transportation Director or Director’s designee must approve permanent changes in advance.
7. Perform pre-trip inspection prior to driving the bus. This includes, but is not limited to, walking the interior and the exterior length of the bus.
8. Perform post-trip inspection prior to leaving the bus. This includes, but is not limited to, walking the interior and the exterior length of the bus.
9. Be responsible for fueling bus, never letting the gas gauge go below half a tank. Some circumstances may require having a full tank before leaving the area. Be courteous to other drivers who may be fueling or parking.
10. Check bus for mechanical defects before and after each operation and present work orders for needed repairs.
11. Keep assigned bus clean. Wash and clean interior of bus twice a year and more often if needed. Wash and clean exterior of bus at least monthly and more often if needed. Sweep inside of bus at least once a day and more often if needed.
12. Report all accidents, vehicle damage, student injuries and complete reports.
13. Drive bus on extracurricular trips as needed.
14. Operate mobile radio and communicate with transportation center according to procedures. Avoid needless remarks.
15. Maintain required paperwork related to bus route and students transported. This includes, but is not limited to, bus route descriptions, seating charts, odometer readings, child care counts, child care student names, eligible rider identification/counts, ineligible rider identification/counts and first Wednesday roll calls.
16. Keep and maintain a notebook pertaining to student discipline, phone calls to parents, contacts with parents, and contacts with school personnel, etc.
17. Attend transportation meetings.
18. Read and be familiar with the Transportation Department Employee Handbook.
19. Regular and reliable prompt attendance is expected.
20. Perform all other projects and duties as assigned by Transportation Director or Director’s Designee.
Working Conditions:
Physical Demands: Operate any FISD school bus and associated equipment; Strength to move wheelchair-bound students; Strength to lift up to 50 pounds; Daily bending, stooping, and climbing; Daily reaching above shoulders; Daily driving vehicle; Daily climbing of stairs and ramps; Daily walking, standing and sitting; Daily sweeping; Mopping as needed; Daily pulling and pushing; Perform duties in inclement weather; Demonstrate ability to exit rear door of school bus.
Working Conditions/Environment: Tobacco free; Alcohol free; Drug free; Moving vehicles Confined spaces; Narrow passageways; Regular education students and special education students; Frequent interruptions requiring effective and positive actions; Maintain safe and clean work areas. Walking on paved and unpaved areas. Walking on slippery and uneven surfaces. Exposure to: temperature extremes, fumes, gases, dirt, dust, cleaning solvents, grease, oil illnesses, constructions and loud noises.
