Responsibilities
Responsible for the management of the technical operations of the Frozen Section Laboratory, Biopsy Grossing Lab and Morgue, overseeing the daily workload distribution. Responsible for the "Gross" examination of all routine tissues; processes Frozen Section specimens for the pathologists; and provides dissection assistance in the Frozen Section Laboratory after the case has initially been assessed by the pathologist/pathology fellow. Participates in Validation of new equipment and reagents. Responsible for orienting new employees and supervising technical training, providing feedback on employee’s performance. Facilitates supply chain management Par Ex inventory. Assists PA Supervisor in Competency Evaluations for PA’s and Grossing Techs. Attends monthly departmental AP meetings and institutional meetings as needed.

Qualifications
Graduate of an Approved Pathologist's Assistant Program or an equivalent of the Pathology Assistant-type of work experience and successful completion of the Pathologist Assistant Fellowship Examination administered by the American Association of Pathologist's Assistants. Must be a graduate of an approved program or have at least five years of experience a pathologist's assistant.
Additional Skills and Qualifications:
Must possess technical and operational knowledge of the Frozen Section Laboratory and pathology procedures for gross examination of all routine tissues. Must be able to take call for pathology procedures as needed. Must have adequate use of both hands. Must be able to distinguish color. Must be able tot work independently. Must be able to handle deceased patients. Must be able to use a microscope and handle clinical instrumentation. Must be able to tolerate exposure to chemical vapors from formaldehyde, acids, bases, and alcohols. Must be able to tolerate low levels of exposure to ionizing radiation (gamma radiation from prostatic seeds). Must work around both hazardous chemicals and infectious materials. Must be able to tolerate exposure to infection hazards such borne pathologiens and CJD. Must be able to handle skin contact with solvents and other chemicals such as cleanser, 10% bleach, and chemical reagents. Must be able to work around machinery with moving parts. Must be able to work with immunosuppressed patients, and frozen section specimens.
License or Certification:
ASCP board of registry certification and current with ASCP Board of Certification (BOC) Certification Maintenance Program.
