Part-Time 1:1 Student Support Aide Middle School — Longview School, Brewster, NY
Dates of Employment: August 24, 2026 – June 25, 2027
Schedule: 2 full days per week OR 4 mornings/afternoons per week
Compensation: $15,000 for the 2026–27 school year
About the Position
Longview School is seeking a warm, dependable, and patient part-time 1:1 Student Support Aide for a bright, fun, and sweet 7th-grade student with physical, visual, and hearing disabilities.
This student is an engaged and capable learner who benefits from individualized support to fully access his school day. We are looking for someone who will get to know him as a whole person, enjoy spending time with him, and provide the practical and educational support he needs while encouraging as much independence as possible.
The position can be structured as two full days per week or four mornings/afternoons per week, depending on the right candidate's availability.
About Longview
Longview is a small, innovative democratic school where students have meaningful ownership of their education and their community.
Students participate in school decision-making, help shape their educational experiences, and learn through discussion, projects, experimentation, problem-solving, and authentic work.
Socio-emotional development is also an important part of our model. We want students to become resourceful, independent, confident, self-aware, and socially capable young adults.
We recognize that students may need different kinds of support and accommodations to fully access their education and participate in school life.
What the Student Needs
The student has physical disabilities as well as visual and hearing disabilities that affect how he accesses his environment and educational materials.
The aide will support him with:
- mobility and navigating the school environment safely and independently;
- minor assistance with eating as needed;
- toileting and personal-care support;
- accessing classroom instruction and educational materials;
- accommodations related to his visual and hearing needs;
- using assistive technology and other tools that increase access and independence;
- organization, transitions, and participation throughout the school day;
- communicating with teachers about what helps him access instruction most successfully; and
- participating as fully and independently as possible in classes and the larger Longview community.
The goal of the 1:1 role is to provide the support the student needs while encouraging his independence wherever possible.
What We're Looking For
The ideal candidate is:
- warm, patient, and dependable;
- comfortable assisting a student with physical and personal-care needs;
- respectful of the student's privacy, dignity, and independence;
- attentive and willing to learn how the student best accesses visual and auditory information;
- comfortable learning and using assistive technology;
- able to provide educational support to a bright middle school student;
- collaborative and able to communicate closely with teachers and other staff;
- flexible and willing to learn the student's individual routines, accommodations, and strategies; and
- genuinely interested in Longview's democratic educational model.
Experience with physical disabilities, visual or hearing disabilities, assistive technology, special education, occupational or physical therapy settings, personal care, or 1:1 student support is a plus, but we are open to the right person who is eager to learn.
We prefer candidates to have a Bachelor's Degree, but we will consider applicants without one who have substantial relevant professional or life experience.
English fluency is required.
What Success Looks Like
We are looking for someone who sees the student first—not his disabilities.
He is a bright, fun, sweet 7th grader who wants to learn, participate, build relationships, and be part of his school community.
A successful aide will get to know his personality, strengths, interests, needs, and sense of humor while helping remove barriers that can make participation more difficult.
The goal is to provide the support he needs to access his education and community while continually encouraging confidence, choice, and independence.
