Senior Electrical Engineer – Substation Design (Power Generation & Utility Projects)
Required Qualifications
- B.S. in Electrical Engineering required
- Professional Engineer (P.E.) license strongly preferred
- Extensive experience in Electrical Substation Design (13kV–345kV)
- Experience supporting the full lifecycle of substation projects from concept through design, construction, commissioning, and closeout
- Strong knowledge of IEEE, NESC, NEC, and utility-specific standards
- Experience preparing technical reports and presenting engineering findings to clients
- Ability to develop equipment specifications, bills of materials (BOMs), and cost estimates
Required Technical Experience
- Electrical substation design and engineering
- Combined Cycle Power Plant experience highly preferred
- Trailer Mounted Power systems experience is a significant plus
- Specification and application of:
- Low Voltage (LV) transformers
- Medium Voltage (MV) transformers
- Switchgear
- Motor Control Centers (MCCs)
- Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs)
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and/or support substation projects from concept development through engineering design, construction support, commissioning, and project closeout
- Support the full lifecycle of substation projects ranging from 13kV to 345kV
- Develop and review complete substation design packages including:
- Physical layouts (plan and elevation views)
- Above-grade and below-grade designs
- Yard layouts
- Grounding systems
- Lightning protection systems
- Raceway, conduit, and cable routing designs
- Control building layouts
- Cable schedules
Protection & Control / System Design
- Create and review:
- One-line diagrams
- Three-line diagrams
- AC/DC power system designs
- Battery sizing calculations
- Protection & Control (P&C) schematics
- SCADA system designs
- Communication system designs
- Relay panel layouts
- Wiring diagrams
- Cable lists
Engineering Analysis & Calculations
Perform and review engineering calculations including:
- Grounding analysis
- Lightning protection analysis
- Insulation coordination studies
- Voltage drop calculations
- Cable sizing calculations
- Conduit fill calculations
- Short-circuit studies
- Load flow studies (as applicable)
Preferred Background
- Utility, EPC, consulting engineering, or power generation environment
- Combined Cycle Power Plant projects
- High-voltage substation design (13kV–345kV)
- Client-facing engineering and technical leadership experience
