We're a Technician-First Company
Birdeye Technologies is built on the people who show up, do the work, and make every deployment happen. Technicians aren't a resource we pull from — they're the reason this company operates. We know that, we mean it, and it shows in the way we run our partnerships.
If you're a serious field technician looking for consistent contract work, a team that respects your craft, and a real path to running your own operation — this is worth three minutes of your time.
We're hiring 1099 contract technicians for fleet and transit technology deployments across the Southeast, East Coast, Midwest, and West Coast. This posting is live because we have active projects and need technicians on the ground. When the position is filled, it comes down — so if you're reading this, the opportunity is real and open right now.
What You'll Be Doing
- Installing, configuring, and testing in-vehicle low-voltage systems — telematics, fleet cameras, AI dashcams, GPS/AVL, and supporting wiring
- Working with platforms including Samsara, Trackunit, Netradyne, and adjacent systems (Lytx, Motive, Geotab, Zonar)
- Reading vehicle wiring diagrams and OEM schematics to execute clean, spec-compliant installs
- Working independently inside vehicle cabins, equipment bays, and fleet yards
- Capturing install documentation — photos, field notes, job close-out — accurately and on time
- Representing Birdeye professionally at every customer site
What We're Looking For
- 2+ years of hands-on experience with fleet telematics, in-vehicle camera systems, or mobile low-voltage installs
- Working knowledge of at least one major fleet platform (Samsara, Trackunit, Netradyne, Lytx, Motive, or similar)
- Ability to execute from wiring diagrams and install specs without step-by-step supervision
- Your own hand tools — show up ready to work
- Reliable personal transportation to get yourself to job sites
- Smartphone for dispatch, photo documentation, and digital paperwork
- Professional communication — you're the face of Birdeye on every job
Preferred (not required):
- Multi-platform experience or cross-vehicle-type installs (light duty, heavy duty, transit)
- OSHA 10 card
- Prior 1099 or independent contractor work history
Backgrounds That Transfer Well
You don't have to come from low-voltage to be a fit. If you work with your hands, understand vehicle systems, and can operate independently — the gap may be smaller than you think.
Trades that transition well into this role:
- Diesel mechanics — vehicle systems, harness work, and working clean in tight spaces all carry over directly
- Car audio / 12V installers — if you've run power, ground, and signal wire and read schematics, this is a natural next step
- Auto body technicians — panel removal, interior work, and finished-quality standards translate well
- Work Market & Field Nation technicians — if you're already running 1099 deployments, you understand the model; we're expanding your platform and your income
What matters is that you're serious, self-directed, and take pride in your work. We'll invest in the rest.
Travel — This Is a Travel Role
All positions require at minimum regional travel. Regional means neighboring states, and deployments span the full national footprint — Southeast (GA, SC, NC, TN, FL), East Coast (VA, MD, PA, NY, NJ, NH), Midwest (OH, IL, MI, MN, MO), and West Coast (CA, OR, WA). If it's on the map and there's a project, we may need you there.
We respect your time on the road — that's why we cover it:
- Travel hours are paid hours
- Lodging is covered on overnight and multi-day deployments
- You are responsible for your own transportation to and from job sites
If travel doesn't work for your situation right now, hold this posting. Come back when it does.
Hours
Expect a standard 40-hour week. Shift windows are project and customer-dependent — some deployments run daytime (8AM–5PM), others run nights (6PM–2AM) based on fleet yard operations and customer requirements. You'll know your schedule before you're deployed. Flexibility between day and night work is a strong advantage in this role.
Who Need Not Apply
We'd rather be upfront now than have a bad fit on either side.
- Technicians without their own tools — every job site, every time, you show up equipped. No exceptions.
- Technicians who can't travel — multi-state and overnight deployments are part of this role from day one.
- Technicians unfamiliar with 1099 work — contract work means you are running your own operation. You manage your taxes, your expenses, and your schedule like a business owner. If that's new territory, do your homework before applying.
1099 — What That Actually Means
This is a contract (1099) position. Here's what you're agreeing to:
- You are responsible for your own federal and state taxes — nothing is withheld from your pay
- No benefits, PTO, or W2 documentation
- You invoice Birdeye for completed work and travel hours; net payment terms apply
- Some projects may require proof of general liability insurance
- Work volume is project-based and varies with deployment schedule
Working 1099 isn't a downgrade — for the right technician, it's the better model. You control your schedule, you pick your projects, and you're compensated for your skill, not your seniority. We support technicians who operate this way because it's how we operate too.
Pay & Payment Schedule
$ 27.50 – $ 33.00 / hour | Travel hours compensated separately
Pay is issued biweekly. Technicians should come into this partnership financially stable and able to bridge to their first pay cycle without needing an advance. If that's a concern, take care of it before you apply — we want to set you up for a good start, not a stressful one.
Training pay: The onboarding/training period is paid at a flat rate of $700/week ($140/day | $17.50/hr). Training typically runs 1–2 weeks depending on the project — it's a short window designed to get you up to speed on systems and standards before you're on live deployments. Once cleared, your full contracted hourly rate applies.
Where This Goes If You're Good
Technicians who deliver consistent quality, communicate professionally, and run their side like a business have a clear path with Birdeye — becoming a vendor. That means managing your own crew, receiving subcontracted deployments from us directly, and operating your own business with Birdeye as a client. It's not handed out — you earn it through performance. But it's a real track and we've built it intentionally because the technicians who grow with us deserve more than a rate card.
