This unit of work rate shall be for all of the work to be performed on a given day. The eligible list for this position will be used for filling a part-time position and is not covered by the Employee Benefits Program.
This is work assisting and safeguarding school children in the crossing of City streets during the morning and evening periods of a school day as designated by the school and principal.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
- Supervises and controls pedestrian and vehicular traffic at school crossings.
- Turns school stop signs in appropriate directions to control traffic at specific times.
- Stops vehicular traffic with portable stop signs and directs or leads children across the street.
- Supervises safety patrol children when available.
- Writes down automobile license numbers and the description of the automobile and motorist when motorist fails to obey traffic signals or signs in the vicinity of the school crossing; reports information to proper authorities.
- Attends training courses on school crossing safety programs.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Data Utilization: Requires good knowledge of City traffic ordinances; pedestrian safety rules and traffic conditions.
- Human Interaction: Requires the ability to follow specific instructions and respond to simple requests from others. Requires the ability to convey information to and work with children.
- Equipment, Machinery, Tools and Materials Use: Requires the ability to operate, maneuver and/or provide simple but continuous adjustment on equipment and/or materials used in performing essential functions.
- Verbal Aptitude: Requires considerable skill in dealing firmly but tactfully with children and motorists. Requires skill in observing and recording information; in interpreting and carrying out written and oral instructions.
- Mathematical Aptitude: None. Functional Reasoning: Requires the ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out basic instructions. Involves routine work with minimal latitude for exercising independent judgment.
- Situational Reasoning: Requires the ability to exercise the judgment required in situations characterized by repetitive or short cycle operations covered by set procedures or sequences.
- Environmental Factors: Tasks may risk exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as temperature extremes, noise.
- Physical Requirements: Requires the ability to walk. Requires ability to turn school stop signs.
- Sensory Requirements: Requires the ability to recognize and identify individual characteristics of shapes to clearly identify objects and sounds to communicate with others.
Qualifications
Ability to understand instructions (written and oral); ability to follow instructions (written and oral) ability to read and understand school crossing manuals and related materials; ability to observe traffic and children crossing City streets during the morning and evening periods; ability to stand for the work period in varying weather conditions, including extreme cold, heat, windy conditions, or precipitation; ability to carry and raise a crossing sign; and the ability to assist children in crossing City streets in a safe manner. Must have ability to deal effectively and courteously with the children, parents, school officials, and the general public.

Veterans Preference Points

City Residence Preference Points
City residents who pass an examination for a position in the classified service and do not receive any other preference will receive a five (5) point preference on a scale of 100 points on the exam. An additional one (1) point shall be added to the passing score of City residents who receive any other preference on a scale of 100 points. City residents must have resided in the City for at least one (1) year at the time of filing their application to be eligible for the preference points.
