Job Summary:
The Patient Care Technician (PCT) provides direct patient care and technical support in an acute care environment. This role integrates the responsibilities of a Nursing Assistant, EKG/Telemetry Technician, and Phlebotomist, supporting safe, compassionate, and efficient care delivery. The PCT functions under the supervision of a Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN)/Registered Nurse (RN) and is an essential member of the interdisciplinary care team.
Qualified Candidate:
Educational and Certification Requirements
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Completion of an accredited PCT program required.
- Required Certifications: Certified Patient Care Technician (CPCT/A), Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA), Certified EKG Technician (CET), Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT), Basic Life Support (BLS).

- Knowledge of basic patient care principles and practices.
- Ability to perform venipuncture and EKG procedures accurately and efficiently.
- Knowledge of infection prevention, patient safety, and HIPAA requirements.
- Strong communication, interpersonal, and customer service skills.
- Ability to prioritize work, multitask, and function effectively in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to work independently while maintaining effective collaboration with the healthcare team.
- Proficiency in electronic health records and clinical documentation systems.
- Frequent standing, walking, bending, lifting, pushing, and pulling.
- Ability to lift, transfer, and reposition patients in accordance with safe patient handling guidelines.
- Ability to perform repetitive motions and utilize clinical equipment safely.
- Ability to respond quickly and effectively during emergency situations.
- Ability to work extended shifts, weekends, holidays, and on-call assignments as required.
Reports to: Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN); Registered Nurse (RN); Unit Manager
Responsibilities:
- Direct Patient Care & Clinical Support: Percent of time: 40%
- Provide direct patient care under the supervision of licensed nursing staff.
- Assist patients with activities of daily living, including bathing, dressing, grooming, feeding, ambulation, and toileting.
- Obtain, record, and report vital signs, height, weight, intake/output, and other patient observations.
- Assist with patient admissions, transfers, discharges, and transport throughout the facility.
- Monitor patient condition and promptly report changes to the appropriate licensed caregiver.
- Maintain patient comfort, safety, dignity, and confidentiality at all times.
- Phlebotomy & Specimen Collection Percent of time: 25%
- Perform venipuncture and capillary blood collection procedures in accordance with established policies and procedures.
- Correctly identify patients and label specimens to ensure accurate testing and patient safety.
- Process, handle, and transport laboratory specimens according to regulatory and facility requirements.
- Maintain phlebotomy supplies and ensure equipment is properly cleaned and stocked.
- Assist with specimen collection for diagnostic testing and communicate collection issues to laboratory personnel as needed.
- Cardiac Monitoring & Diagnostic Support Percent of time: 15%
- Perform electrocardiograms (EKGs) accurately and timely as ordered by providers.
- Prepare patients for cardiac monitoring procedures and explain procedures as appropriate.
- Recognize and report abnormal cardiac rhythms or findings according to facility protocols.
- Maintain EKG equipment and ensure quality recordings are obtained for physician interpretation.
- Assist clinical staff with diagnostic testing and patient monitoring activities.
- Documentation & Regulatory Compliance Percent of time: 10%
- Utilize Accurately document patient care activities, procedures performed, and observations in the medical record.
- Maintain compliance with all hospital, state, federal, and accreditation standards.
- Follow infection prevention, safety, and patient privacy regulations, including HIPAA requirements.
- Participate in mandatory education, competency assessments, and departmental training.
- Quality, Safety, & Customer Service Percent of time: 10%

- Assist in quality improvement initiatives and compliance activities as assigned.
