Position Summary
We are seeking a results-driven Backhaul Specialist to optimize our Over-the-Road (OTR) driver schedules and eliminate deadhead miles. You will proactively identify, negotiate, and secure profitable return loads for our fleet using digital load boards, broker relationships, and direct shippers. Your core focus is keeping our trucks moving profitably on their return trips back to our primary hub.
Key Responsibilities
- Secure profitable backhauls: Source and book return freight for OTR drivers using direct customer networks and platforms like DAT, Truckstop, etc.
- Negotiate freight rates: Negotiate directly with brokers and shippers to secure the highest possible spot market or contract rates per mile.
- Route and plan schedules: Map driver return routes to minimize deadhead distance, manage hours of service (HOS), and maintain transit safety.
- Coordinate driver communication: Act as the primary point of contact for drivers on return legs, resolving roadside check-in delays or freight issues.
- Monitor market trends: Track freight lane capacity, spot market pricing spikes, and seasonal shifts to maximize revenue potential.
Required Skills and Qualifications
- Experience: Minimum 1–3 years of experience in freight dispatching, freight brokerage, or fleet load planning.
- Software proficiency: Hands-on experience with Transportation Management Systems (TMS) and major digital load boards.
- Negotiation skills: Strong phone presence and a proven track record of negotiating freight rates successfully.
- Problem-solving: Ability to handle route changes, weather delays, and missed appointment windows under tight deadlines.
- Regulations knowledge: Familiarity with DOT compliance, driver hours of service (HOS), and electronic logging device (ELD) tracking rules.
