Position Summary
MUST have previous track inspection experience.
The Track Utility Worker performs inspection, maintenance, repair, and construction of railroad track, switches, crossings, and related infrastructure to ensure the safe operation of the Valley Railroad Company's freight, passenger, and heritage railroad operations. This position requires prior railroad track inspection and maintenance experience and the ability to work safely in an active railroad environment.
The Track Utility Worker may also assist with general railroad maintenance projects and other duties as assigned to support the Engineering Department.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Perform routine inspection of railroad track, switches, turnouts, grade crossings, and other track components.
- Identify defects and report conditions requiring corrective action.
- Perform maintenance and repairs including:
- Tie replacement
- Rail replacement
- Spike and anchor installation
- Joint maintenance
- Gauge correction
- Surfacing support
- Ballast distribution
- Switch maintenance and adjustment
- Assist with track construction and rehabilitation projects.
- Operate and maintain hand tools, hydraulic tools, power tools, and small track equipment.
- Assist surfacing, tamping, lining, and ballast operations.
- Maintain vegetation control and drainage systems within the railroad right-of-way.
- Inspect and maintain roadway crossings.
- Assist in emergency repairs following storms, washouts, derailments, or other service interruptions.
- Accurately complete inspection reports and maintenance records.
- Work safely around moving trains and railroad equipment.
- Follow all Valley Railroad Company operating rules, engineering standards, and safety procedures.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Demonstrated experience in railroad track inspection and maintenance.
- Working knowledge of:
- Railroad track structure
- FRA Track Safety Standards (49 CFR Part 213)
- Track geometry and gauge requirements
- Switches and turnouts
- Ability to recognize unsafe track conditions and recommend corrective action.
- Ability to safely use railroad maintenance tools and equipment.
- Valid driver's license with acceptable driving record.
- Ability to successfully pass any required background checks and drug/alcohol testing.
Preferred Qualifications
- FRA Track Inspector qualification.
- Experience operating on-track maintenance equipment.
- CDL or ability to obtain one.
- Welding experience.
- Experience with tourist, short line, or Class III railroad operations.
Physical Requirements
- Frequently lift and carry up to 75 pounds.
- Walk several miles daily over uneven terrain and ballast.
- Bend, kneel, climb, stoop, and work in confined spaces.
- Work outdoors in all weather conditions.
- Stand for extended periods.
- Ability to perform physically demanding work safely.
Working Conditions
- Outdoor work year-round in varying weather conditions.
- Exposure to moving trains, heavy equipment, dust, noise, and vibration.
- Weekend, holiday, evening, and emergency call-out work may be required.
- Overtime may be necessary during maintenance projects or emergency repairs.

Pay: $25.00 - $35.00 per hour
