Provides instruction and assesses student learning of American Sign Language (ASL) and other Deaf Culture coursework; participates in program promotion, articulation, and student recruitment; serves on college committees as available, and performs other duties appropriate for an adjunct faculty member as assigned; is dedicated to the learning college concepts and develops programs and facilitates activities that promote student success and lifelong learning.
The successful candidate will: teach undergraduate ASL and Deaf Culture courses using face-to-face and online learning methods and using a variety of instructional strategies designed to assist the learner in meeting the objectives of the course, such as cooperative learning, experiential learning, and critical thinking and reflective practices; be familiar with Canvas as a Learning Management System (LMS); have experience with the Signing Naturally curriculum; be prepared to contribute to program development and implementation; be committed to maintaining the academic integrity of the college; have the ability to differentiate for and support diverse learning needs; be willing to take on leadership roles within the program, as needed; support data collection and reporting needs; be able to work collaboratively with colleagues; and perform other duties as assigned.
A. Provides instruction and evaluates student performance for each instructional assignment.
B. Selects and reviews educational strategies and materials to facilitate achievement of competencies related to each course taught.
C. Prepares current syllabi and instructional materials in accordance with course master syllabi, college policies and procedures.
D. Collaborates with colleagues to review and revise curriculum, teaching materials, and teaching methods to promote student success and lifelong learning.
E. Meets classes as scheduled by the College.
F. Maintains and provides attendance and grade records for each class.
G. Assesses student learning outcomes at the class, course, and program levels as defined by the faculty Assessment Committee.
H. Works in a collaborative manner and responds to phone and email requests promptly.
I. Provides students additional or academically related assistance on an individual basis, and/or refers to other appropriate resources.
J. Follows the policies and procedures of the College.
K. Maintains regular contact with the Division Dean.
L. Adheres to the Mission, Vision and Core Values of the College.
Other Responsibilities:
A. Performs other duties as required or assigned by the dean.
B. May attend the commencement program.
C. May participate in in-service development activities.
D. May attend division meetings.
E. May serve on college committees as appropriate.
F. May serve as a resource person in open laboratory or tutor session in the academic setting.
G. May represent and interpret the instructional areas to schools and the community at available opportunities as appropriate.
A. Master’s degree in discipline or related fields of Linguistics, Sign Language Studies, Sign Language Education, Interpreter Education, Deaf Education required.
B. American Sign Language Teachers Association (ASLTA) certification or American Sign Language Proficiency Interview (ASLIP) Level 4 required.
C. Successful college-level teaching experience in ASL required; ASL fluency and cultural knowledge preferred.
D. Prior experience as an excellent, innovative teacher and with the use of instructional technologies desirable; community college teaching experience preferred.
E. Qualified candidate must be functionally literate in reading, writing, and computation skills as well as computer literate or willing to learn.
Pay rate determined upon hire.
