Tucked into the rolling hills of Healdsburg, we are a small-census, high-touch residential treatment program for adults recovering from substance use disorders. We pair cutting-edge, evidence-based clinical care; including CBT, DBT, Motivational Interviewing, EMDR, and trauma-informed treatment with an experiential model that treats the whole person, not just the diagnosis.
The Role
As Clinical Director, you own the quality, integrity, and regulatory soundness of everything clinical that happens here. You lead and develop the clinical team, oversee the treatment program end to end, and hold the standard for care that is both genuinely evidence-based and genuinely personal. You are equally comfortable in a treatment team meeting, in a difficult family session, and in front of a DHCS analyst during a licensing visit.
This is a role for a licensed clinician who wants real authority over program design and a small enough census to know every client's story — not a paperwork figurehead.
What You Will Do
- Provide clinical leadership for the residential and withdrawal management program, ensuring services are delivered within each staff member's scope of practice and in line with the ASAM Criteria.
- Supervise, mentor, and evaluate clinical staff, including primary therapists, SUD counselors, and behavioral health technicians; provide clinical supervision to licensed associates where qualified.
- Oversee assessment, treatment planning, and documentation quality — including multidimensional assessments completed within 72 hours of admission, treatment and recovery plans within 10 calendar days, and 30-day progress reviews.
- Maintain compliance with DHCS licensing, Level of Care designation requirements, Title 9 (CCR), HIPAA, and 42 CFR Part 2; serve as a primary point of contact during audits, surveys, and licensing visits.
- Monitor staffing composition to meet regulatory thresholds, including the requirement that at least 30 percent of counseling staff be licensed or certified, with all remaining counseling staff properly registered.
- Partner with the Medical Director and nursing leadership to coordinate care across detox, incidental medical services (IMS), and residential treatment, and to maintain clear criteria for transfer to a higher level of care.
- Develop and refine curriculum and programming, integrating evidence-based modalities with our experiential model.
- Lead treatment team meetings, manage clinical risk and crisis response, and oversee discharge and continuing-care planning.
- Track outcomes and utilization, and drive continuous quality improvement across the clinical program.
- Support hiring, onboarding, training, and retention of clinical staff, including required ASAM and withdrawal management training.
Qualifications and DHCS Requirements
Required
- Active, unencumbered California license as an LMFT, LCSW, LPCC, or Licensed Clinical Psychologist, in good standing with the applicable board (BBS or Board of Psychology). Licensed physicians and other qualified LPHAs will also be considered.
- Minimum of three to five years of clinical experience in substance use disorder treatment, including residential and/or withdrawal management settings, with at least two years in a supervisory or leadership capacity.
- Working knowledge of DHCS licensing and certification requirements, Level of Care designations (3.1, 3.2-WM, 3.3, 3.5), and CCR Title 9 standards, including the requirement that at least 30 percent of counseling staff be licensed or certified and all other counseling staff be registered.
- Completion of ASAM training, or willingness to complete it upon hire, consistent with DHCS requirements for staff conducting level of care assessments and determining appropriate level of care.
- Demonstrated competence in clinical supervision, documentation and utilization standards, and survey or audit readiness.
- Knowledge of and adherence to HIPAA and 42 CFR Part 2 confidentiality requirements.
- Current CPR / First Aid (BLS) certification, or willingness to obtain prior to start.
- Negative TB test and successful DOJ Live Scan background clearance.
- Valid California driver's license.
Strongly Preferred
- Qualified and approved to provide clinical supervision to AMFT, ASW, or APCC associates under current BBS supervisor requirements.
- Prior experience opening, scaling, or re-designing a licensed residential program, or leading a facility through DHCS licensing, LOC designation, or IMS approval.
- Experience in private-pay or luxury treatment settings, and comfort working with high-acuity, high-profile, or professionally accomplished clients.
- Advanced training in trauma-informed modalities such as EMDR or DBT, and experience with co-occurring disorders.
- Additional AOD credentialing (CADC-II, LAADC, or equivalent).
- Familiarity with accreditation standards such as Joint Commission or CARF.
Schedule
This is a full-time, exempt leadership position, primarily weekday daytime hours, with on-call availability and occasional evening or weekend presence as census and clinical needs require.
Pay: $103,173.34 - $160,251.76 per year
