GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Under the general supervision of Chicago Public Library Foundation, CyberNavigators assist the public at Chicago Public Library locations with their most urgent computer and technology needs such as setting up email accounts, understanding good passwords and filling out online forms. CyberNavigators help patrons navigate the digital world to complete helpful tasks and teach concepts as they assist, thereby building patron digital skills and confidence online. This contract position requires a high level of customer service, communication, positivity, and patience as well as the ability to interact with the general public in a professional manner.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
- Familiarity with basic functions of software, email, and internet
- Experience with filling out online forms
- Knowledge of secure internet practices
TASKS AND DUTIES
- Based on librarian’s referral or other intake, helps patrons access, fill out and/or complete, online forms for financial, government and social services resources
- Assists patrons with resume formatting and submitting job applications
- Based on librarian’s referral, assists patrons with accessing, filling out and submitting forms for online assistance such as healthcare, social services, and government resources
- Assists older adults with online activities, including social media, personal devices, and email
- Explains functionality of online systems and actions to help patrons build their digital literacy
- Shares information and resources with patrons to encourage them to pursue developing their online skillset
- Shares helpful tips and best practices so patrons understand that digital tools can make life simple, convenient and fun
- Shares information about connectivity and device assistance
- Assists with patron feedback and program assessment surveys
- Operates a variety of equipment including desktop and laptop computers
- Contributes to keeping program records and statistics
- Refers patrons to reference librarians for assistance in finding resources and external organizations
- Understands and adheres to CPL’s patron privacy guidelines
DESIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Job experience and/or coursework in computer technology, software applications and troubleshooting, multimedia, Internet research, teaching, or training
- Solid interpersonal and communication skills for providing customer service and interacting with staff across the organization
- Willingness to take direction; ability to work both independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced and service-oriented environment.
- Demonstrated ability to manage time and tasks independently and appropriately
- Ability to work successfully with adults and older adults
- Experience as tutor or instructor
- Current college student or graduate
- Commit to a consistent weekly schedule
- Commit to attend paid training
Salary: $20 per hour
Hours: 8 month CONTRACTUAL position, part time 20 hours/week

Schedules: To be discussed during the interview, but typically 3-4 shifts per week, each ranging from 4 to 7 hours. Shifts are generally scheduled during daytime hours, with some branches requiring evening and weekend availability.

All hired candidates will need to submit to a background check. The start of the position will be dependent on background check clearance.
