Job Summary:
GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The Emergency Dispatcher receives emergency and non-emergency calls, determines the nature and/or severity of the call, and dispatches emergency services by using radio and telecommunications systems to transmit details to appropriate emergency services departments/personnel to respond as needed.
Job Duties:
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Receives incoming calls and determines the nature of the emergency.
- Exercises strong problem-solving and customer service skills and have the ability to work well in stressful situations.
- Determines the location and type of call, which the responding agency should be, and the most efficient and safest route to the scene.
- Dispatches the appropriate agency and coordinates with other public safety agencies.
- Determines if other responders are required, such as law enforcement officers, medical responders, firefighters, tow trucks, and dispatch other services if needed.
- Communicates with emergency staff to assure timeliness of service.
- Must be detailed-oriented to relay the proper information to the correct agency.
- Prioritizes requests for services.
- Answers queries from the public regarding non-emergency situations.
- Operates computer dispatch systems efficiently to obtain information for law enforcement, fire and rescue operations, and emergency medical services.
- Maintains appropriate paperwork as required.
- Compiles and tabulates data as necessary.
- Complies with the applicable state, tribal, and federal regulations in regard to the security, safety, and confidentiality of any record they create, maintain, transfer, or destroy, whether the record is written, taped, computerized, or stored in any other medium.
- Participates in peer-interviewing and helps select staff for the Emergency Communications Department.
- Participates in training sessions as assigned.
- Performs other duties, tasks, and services consistent with this position as assigned.
LEVEL OF RESPONSIBILITY
- This position does not directly supervise any individuals.
- Assignments received in broad terms with timelines and objectives set.
Qualifications:
QUALIFICATIONS
- High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED).
COMPENTENCIES

- Proficient in Law Enforcement ten code
- Ability to remain calm in various situations
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to sit; use hands to finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands or feel. The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and taste or smell. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to ten (10) pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to correct/adjust focus.
CERTIFICATES, LICENES, REGISTRATIONS
- Must possess a valid driver's license with a driving history verified through a motor vehicle report that meets the requirements for Cherokee Nation underwriting rating.
- Must possess or obtain Oklahoma Law Enforcement Telecommunications System (OLETS) or Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD) certifications within one (1) year of hire and maintain throughout employment.
- Must possess or obtain and maintain the National Incident Management System (NIMS) certifications listed below:
o ICS-100: Introduction to the Incident Command System
o ICS-200: ICS for Single Resources and Initial Action Incidents
o IS-700: National Incident Management System An Introduction
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
- The employee must not be and will not be under sanction by the United States Department of Health and Human Services Office of the Inspector General (OIG) or by the General Services Administration (GSA) or listed on the OIG's Cumulative Sanction Report, or the GSA's List of Excluded Providers, or listed on the OIG's List of Excluded Individuals/Entities (LEIE).
