Job Description
We are seeking an enthusiastic and dependable Gardening & STEAM Instructor to lead engaging, hands-on enrichment classes for elementary school students (Grades K–5). This role combines gardening, environmental education, and STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) concepts to help students explore the natural world through interactive learning experiences.
The ideal candidate enjoys working with young children, has experience in gardening or environmental education, and can create a fun, safe, and educational learning environment that encourages curiosity, creativity, and stewardship of the environment.
Responsibilities
- Lead in-school gardening and STEAM enrichment classes for K–5 students.
- Teach age-appropriate lessons focused on gardening, plant science, sustainability, ecosystems, and environmental awareness.
- Facilitate hands-on activities such as planting, garden maintenance, observation projects, and simple science experiments.
- Incorporate STEAM concepts into gardening activities to promote critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
- Foster a positive, inclusive, and engaging classroom environment.
- Ensure safe use of gardening tools and materials while maintaining child-safe gardening practices.
- Manage student behavior using positive classroom management techniques.
- Take attendance and submit brief post-class reports following each session.
- Communicate professionally with program coordinators and school staff.
Requirements
- Ability to travel to assigned school sites within San Francisco.
- Successful completion of a background check prior to employment.
- Ability to reliably commit to the Fall program schedule.
- Completion of required training and onboarding documentation before the start of the program.
- Submission of attendance records and brief session summaries after each class.
- Ability to safely supervise students during gardening activities and outdoor learning experiences.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience teaching gardening, environmental science, outdoor education, agriculture, or STEAM-based programs.
- Familiarity with school gardens, sustainability initiatives, composting, or urban gardening.
- Previous experience in after-school, in-school, camp, or enrichment settings.
- Educational background in Environmental Science, Biology, Education, Agriculture, Horticulture, or a related field.
Pay: $28.00 - $32.00 per hour
