Responsibilities
- Prepare patients for sleep studies by explaining procedures, ensuring comfort, and collecting relevant medical history.
- Set up and calibrate sleep monitoring equipment, including sensors for brain activity, eye movement, muscle activity, heart rate, and breathing patterns.
- Monitor patients throughout overnight sleep assessments, recording vital signs and observing sleep behaviors to identify abnormalities.
- Assist with diagnostic evaluations by analyzing data collected during sleep studies and documenting findings accurately.
- Collaborate with healthcare providers to interpret results and support the development of treatment plans for sleep disorders.
- Maintain detailed records of patient information, test procedures, and equipment calibration logs to ensure compliance with regulatory standards.
- Provide education to patients about sleep hygiene and post-study instructions to promote ongoing health and wellness.
Skills
- Strong knowledge of respiratory therapy techniques relevant to sleep medicine and patient monitoring.
- In-depth understanding of physiology, anatomy, and medical terminology related to sleep and respiratory functions.
- Experience performing physical examinations and assessing vital signs such as heart rate, oxygen saturation, and respiratory effort.
- Familiarity with sleep center operations, including setup of diagnostic equipment and patient care protocols.
- Ability to interpret diagnostic data from polysomnography (sleep study) equipment effectively.
- Excellent communication skills for explaining procedures clearly and providing compassionate patient support.
- Knowledge of medical safety standards, infection control practices, and regulatory compliance related to sleep diagnostics.
