The Children's Home Society of WV is seeking a full-time Registered Nurse at our youth emergency shelter in Summersville.
Position Goal: To coordinate and direct the efforts of the staff in providing for the ongoing physical and mental health care of youth in emergency shelter care.
Essential Functions
- Assess the individual resident’s physical and mental health needs and determine the appropriate level of intervention. Schedule all medical appointments.
- Contribute to the nursing assessment by collecting, reporting, and documenting objective and subjective data in an accurate and timely manner.
- Review physician’s orders, drug regimens, and complete medication count. Match the physician’s order with medication administration records.
- Obtain WV Department of Human Services approval of resident medications.
- Educate residents and staff about each medication the resident is taking. Describe the benefits of the medication, the common side effects or dangers of the medication, explain how and when the medication should be taken, and visually identify medications.
- Train staff about dietary concerns related to medication administration.
- Provide meaningful observations of each resident both orally and in writing. Review and document the effectiveness of medications in medication logs, nursing assessments, program notes, and incident reports.
- Report any change in the resident’s condition or any action that is inappropriate or might jeopardize the resident’s safety, with recommendations for appropriate action.
- Investigate, along with the shelter supervisor, all errors of medication administration. Review and sign all incident reports in which there is a self-administration of medication error.
- Consult with the staff regarding medical questions and respond to emergency calls from staff.
- Observe and document, at least quarterly, staff administering medication to shelter residents.
- Ensure the completion of professional correspondence as needed.
Requirements
- Registered Nurse with a current license in the state of WV
- Proven experience as a Registered Nurse; experience working with children and youth preferred
- Complete criminal background and child and adult abuse registry checks
- Possess a valid driver's license and automobile insurance
- Ability to work under pressure and multitask
- Responsible and compassionate
- Willingness to assist in providing a clean and nurturing environment
- Understand and support the values of family-centered services, which include: commitment to family stability and development of skills in assessing risk to children to ensure safety
