Maclay School seeks an energetic, student-centered educator to teach Middle School Physical Education and coach at least one athletic season. The ideal candidate is both structured and relational. They believe students develop confidence, resilience, and lifelong habits of wellness when they are supported, challenged, and actively engaged in meaningful physical activity.

You understand the developmental needs of middle school students and create an environment that balances structure with encouragement. Your classes are active, inclusive, and purposeful, with clear expectations and consistent routines that support both engagement and growth for all students.
You are energized by working with students both in and out of the classroom, and you see coaching as a natural extension of your role as an educator. You value relationships, communicate clearly, and contribute positively to a collaborative school community.
Key Responsibilities
Design and lead engaging physical education classes that promote fitness, skill development, teamwork, and lifelong wellness
Teach fundamental movement skills and introduce sport-specific skills and strategies in developmentally appropriate ways
Model and reinforce safety practices, sportsmanship, and responsible participation
Foster a positive, inclusive class environment that supports students of varying abilities and confidence levels
Differentiate instruction and adapt activities to meet diverse student needs
Assess student growth through participation, skill development, and effort
Maintain a safe, organized environment, including appropriate use and care of equipment and facilities
Collaborate with colleagues to support a cohesive and developmentally aligned PE program
Maintain appropriate records, including student progress and program materials
Coach at least one athletic season, supporting student-athletes’ development, teamwork, and character
Communicate effectively with students, families, and colleagues
Engage fully in the life of the school, including advising, student activities, meetings, and professional learning
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education or a related field required
Prior teaching and/or coaching experience with middle or upper school students preferred
Strong understanding of adolescent development and physical literacy
Ability to create structured, engaging, and inclusive learning environments
Demonstrated ability to differentiate instruction for a range of learners
Strong communication and interpersonal skills
Commitment to student-centered teaching and ongoing professional growth
Willingness to contribute to the school community through coaching and student engagement
Physical Requirements and ADA Statement
This role requires regular movement between classrooms and buildings, active engagement in classroom instruction, and the ability to navigate indoor and outdoor school environments. The position also requires the ability to sit, stand, walk, communicate clearly, operate standard classroom technology, and occasionally lift materials up to 20–30 pounds.
