Job Summary
St. John's Lutheran Church seeks a part-time financial secretary/accounting manager to manage funds and execute essential bookkeeping responsibilities to assist in carrying out our ministry in a professional manner. Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in accounting/finance or commensurate experience.
- Experience with fund accounting in a church or nonprofit organization.
- Experience administering and processing payroll.
- Experience with QuickBooks (desktop, non-profit version) .This position is twelve to fifteen hours per week, and employee is required to work in the office at least four hours during office hours. Exact schedule will be negotiated.
Essential Functions
- Manage the congregation’s funds; maintain accurate records of designated, restricted, and memorial fund contributions and expenditures.
- Process accounts payable, including preparing checks, electronic payments, and approved reimbursements
- Record financial transactions and reconcile statements.
- Process payroll: time sheets, automatic payroll deposits, pastor’s pension and benefits, payroll taxes, quarterly tax reports, W-2’s and other tax forms.
- Generate financial reports: monthly for the Finance Team and Council, annually for the congregation and ELCA, and as requested by staff
- Generate quarterly giving statements to donors and receipt letters for memorial gifts.
- Meet monthly with the Finance Team, treasurer, and pastor to present financial reports.
- Coordinate with the Memorial Fund Team for records and disbursements.
- Coordinate with the Finance Team and Personnel Committee for preparation of the annual budget.
- Coordinate with the Stewardship Team in conjunction with the annual appeal.
- Provide the Audit Team with records for annual review.
- Coordinate with the Scholarship Team, Council, and Office Administrator for the availability of scholarship funds (spring) and disbursements (summer).
- Coordinate with the team of members who count offerings weekly.
- Other duties as assigned.

Reports to: The pastor who is the head of staff and supervisor.
Terms and Conditions of Employment and Compensation
- Hours: 12-15 hours per week. Presence on site is expected; schedule can be flexible, as negotiated with the head of staff, but some hours during regular business is required.
- Salary: This position is salaried, to be determined annually by the Executive Team.
- Time Away: Employee may accrue up to 13 hours of PTO annually after 90 days employment.
Physical Requirements
- Is able to move about the office freely to access file cabinets and storage.
- Operate a computer and other office equipment.
- Transport deposits to the bank.
