The Civil Superintendent is responsible for providing direct in-field supervision of crews working on all phases of heavy civil construction for Wagner Construction, with a focus on earthwork/grading and underground wet utilities (piping). The Superintendent is responsible for maintaining and improving the efficiency and effectiveness of all areas under his/her direction and control. The Civil Superintendent serves as the front-line Safety Officer for the site/project and is directly responsible for the safety of his/her crew. In this role, the Civil Superintendent will direct the crew in grading and utility installation operations.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
· Assessing job priorities and assigning employees to appropriate job tasks across earthwork, grading, excavation, and wet utility installation.
· Providing input to the project team to identify key success factors, sequencing, and production goals.
· Providing technical expertise to evaluate piping quality and design intent; verifying line/grade, bedding, compaction, and tie-ins.
· Directing earthwork and grading operations including subgrade preparation, fine grading, and support of paving/structures as applicable.
· Recording a Daily Job Diary with production quantities, manpower, equipment, deliveries, and notable events.
· Keeping a set of as-built plans and maintaining accurate redlines.
· Understanding required productions, tracking progress, and meeting the goal while maintaining safety and quality.
· Submitting timecards and trucking reports/field documentation weekly and on time.
· Having signed Work Change Directive (or equivalent approval) prior to completing any additional or changed work from the plans.
· Coordinating equipment needs and ensuring tools, equipment, and materials are available for the planned work.
· Overseeing the work and making sure it runs smoothly and as per the project plan; coordinating subcontractors and other trades.
· Giving clear directions and coaching to crews to avoid repetitive mistakes, rework, and safety/quality issues.
· Making sure company rules, jobsite expectations, and housekeeping standards are followed by the crew.
· Holding a daily Safety meeting, monitoring safety orientations, and recording required safety documentation in a log.
· Ensuring that all client, State and Federal safety codes, requirements and standards are complied with within the assigned area of responsibility.
· Monitoring crews and subcontractor organizational structure, sizing, crew mix ratios, performance, and compliance matters.
· Advising the project team of status, issues, impacts, risks, schedule constraints, and cost influence factors.
· Reviewing and monitoring cost and man-hour budgets for installation activities and assisting with staffing, facilities, equipment, and tool requirement planning.
· Ensuring that all equipment is safe and ready for operation at all times; reporting damage, coordinating repairs/maintenance, and operating equipment when necessary for completion of projects.
· Performing labor incidental to the work as required and maintaining regular attendance and punctuality at the workplace.
Job Qualifications:
· 5+ years of superintendent experience within the public works or heavy civil construction industry, with earthwork/grading and underground wet utilities (piping) experience.
· Experience reading and interpreting blueprints/engineering plans and specifications.
· Field supervision experience is required; work includes field inspections and safety leadership.
· Must have a valid driver’s license.
Required Skills:
· Considerable knowledge of the materials, methods and techniques relative to underground utilities, earthwork/grading, and road/highway construction and maintenance.
· Knowledge of field safety and ability to lead crews in a safe work environment.
· Ability to identify additional work not identified in the plans and specs and communicate needs promptly.
· Ability to read engineering plans and blueprints; understanding of grade/line, elevations, and project requirements.
· Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing with the crew, subcontractors, and project team.
· Flexibility: Ability to work in a number of diverse locations is pertinent, as work locations may change daily.
· Expected Hours: Hours will vary by job, location and season. Working a night shift may be required.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
· Works both indoors and outdoors and may be exposed to harsh weather conditions.
· Frequently performs physical activities that require considerable use of the arms and legs and moving the whole body, such as standing, lifting, walking, stooping, bending, kneeling, and crouching; climb, balance, talk and hear.
· Lifts, pushes, pulls, and carries heavy objects, machinery and tools; ability to move and carry objects up to 50 pounds.
· Works around vehicles and machinery with moving parts and may be exposed to exhaust fumes, gasoline, and diesel fuel.
· Vision abilities (with correction) include close, distance, peripheral, depth, and the ability to adjust focus; ability to climb ladders and work at heights.
· May be exposed to loud noise.
