Position Overview:
The City of North Adams is seeking a skilled and experienced Public Safety Mechanic to oversee the
maintenance, repair, and servicing of all vehicles and equipment for the Police and Fire Departments.
This position plays a crucial role in ensuring that emergency response vehicles are in top operational
condition to support the city's public safety efforts.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
- Perform routine maintenance, diagnostics, and repairs on a variety of public safety vehicles,
including police cruisers, fire engines, and specialized emergency equipment.
- Inspect and troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems to ensure vehicles are in
safe operating condition.
- Conduct preventative maintenance services such as oil changes, brake replacements, tire
inspections, and fluid checks.
- Perform emergency and on-site repairs to keep vehicles in service and minimize downtime.
- Maintain accurate service records, work logs, and inventory of tools, parts, and equipment.
- Coordinate and oversee outsourced repairs when necessary, ensuring vendors meet city safety
and performance standards.
- Stay up to date on industry best practices, emerging technologies, and safety regulations related
to emergency vehicle maintenance.
- Assist in ordering and stocking necessary parts and supplies for vehicle maintenance.
- Adhere to all safety standards and protocols when working with hazardous materials and heavy
machinery.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Police Chief or Fire Chief.
Minimum Qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED; Vocational or technical certification in automotive or diesel
mechanics preferred.
- 3-5 years of experience in automotive or heavy equipment repair, preferably working with
emergency vehicles.
- Experience with police pursuit-rated vehicles, fire apparatus, or specialty public safety
equipment is highly desirable.
- Knowledge of electrical systems, hydraulic components, and emergency lighting systems.
- Valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class B with air brake endorsement (or ability to
obtain within six months of hire).
- ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) or EVT (Emergency Vehicle Technician) certifications
preferred.
- Strong diagnostic skills with the ability to use computerized diagnostic tools and software.
- Ability to lift up to 75 lbs., work in various weather conditions, and handle physically demanding
tasks.
- Must be able to pass a criminal background check and drug screening.
