BRIEF DESCRIPTION: Under the direct supervision, control and direction of the project team members and project leaders, during all phases of the Project Delivery Process, the Project Captain; coordinates and often delegates and distributes the creation, documentation and presentation of architectural, interior design and planning content intended to advance projects in the studio, and participates in the Design Process to research, explore and generate design solutions. This is an ADVANCED LEVEL position that requires broad knowledge about project delivery, project management and the art and science of building and contract documentation. This position requires practical and relevant work experience following the completion of a Professional Degree in Architecture or a related Undergraduate Design Degree Program. Employees holding this position are preferred to be licensed or actively seeking licensure in their respective design discipline [i.e., Architect, Interior Designer and Planner.]
The Project Captain participates in the design and strategic project planning and delivery process providing full coordination and support through each phase of the project from Pre-Design, Design and through the Construction and Close Out phases. Responsible for management, coordination and preparation of architectural, interior design and planning presentations and production documents as needed or in the form of submittals. Participates in and coordinates design studies and evaluation of design proposals under the direction of the Principals, Studio Directors, Project Managers and/or Project Architects.
The Project Captain Liaises with Project Managers, Principals and other Architects/Architectural staff, Clients, General Contractors and Design Consultants. In the context of the Ideal Project Pyramid Structure, the Project Captain often serves as an “understudy” to the Project Manager and often fulfills the central role as the “project-hub” or “clearing-house” of information, communication and transactions. Coordinates with Principals, Project Managers and Project Architects/Designers on researching, exploring and generating appropriate technical solutions and product strategies. Project size differentiates this position from the junior to senior level. May manage and coordinate smaller projects directly with Principals and/or Studio Directors.
Must have the ability to lead, coordinate, manage and delegate to the project support team for project production, including utilizing other design professionals in other disciplines and outsource drafting, 3D (BIM) modeling and illustration services. The Project Captain may serve as a subject matter expert on specialized systems. Develops and represents the lead technical viewpoint on projects. Manages submittals and coordinates with all relevant parties including, but not limited to, Firm leadership, design consultants, general contractors, owners and agencies.
