Job Summary
As an Orthopedic Registered Nurse (RN), you will deliver dedicated, patient-centered care utilizing the foundational nursing process of assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation. In this role, you will coordinate and execute high-quality clinical care based on established orthopedic protocols and physician orders.
You will work closely with an interdisciplinary healthcare team—including physicians, fellow nurses, and physical therapists—to ensure excellent patient outcomes while fostering a supportive, empathetic environment for patients and their families during their post-surgical or acute recovery journeys.
Essential Functions & Responsibilities
- Clinical Care Delivery: Coordinate and provide exceptional, patient-centered orthopedic care aligned with organizational policies, clinical protocols, and evidence-based nursing processes.
- Patient Assessment: Conduct comprehensive clinical assessments, document findings promptly, and immediately report critical changes in patient status to the healthcare team.
- Developmental Care: Apply specialized knowledge of human growth and development to deliver age-appropriate care, interventions, and patient/family education.
- Medication Administration: Safely administer prescribed medications, monitor closely for adverse side effects, and maintain strict documentation according to nursing standards of practice.
- Physician Collaboration: Assist attending physicians during clinical procedures within your documented scope of competency and skill set.
- Care Planning: Partner with the interdisciplinary care team to build, implement, and continuously evaluate individualized care plans tailored to unique patient recovery goals.
- Emergency Response: Promptly respond to medical emergencies and lead/participate in life-saving interventions, including CPR and code team activations as necessary.
- Patient Advocacy: Act as a dedicated advocate for patient rights, preferences, and clinical needs, ensuring their voice guides the care delivery model.
- Discharge & Family Education: Educate patients and families on complex medical conditions, orthopedic treatment tracks, and post-discharge safety to optimize adherence and recovery.
- Infection Control: Strictly implement and maintain infection control protocols to mitigate healthcare-associated infections.
- Advanced Equipment Operation: Monitor, configure, and safely operate essential medical equipment (e.g., IV pumps, patient monitors, ventilators) required for high-acuity care.
- Patient Safety Leadership: Champion patient safety initiatives by adhering to National Patient Safety Goals and maintaining a pristine, hazard-free clinical environment.
- Compliance & Quality: Engage in routine clinical audits, chart reviews, and compliance tracking to align with regulatory mandates and industry standards.
- Delegation & Care Coordination: Exhibit strong, responsible decision-making when planning, delegating task assignments, and managing care workloads.
- Electronic Health Records: Complete thorough, prompt, and legally compliant documentation of all patient interactions, care interventions, and educational touchpoints within the medical record.
- Professional Growth: Invest in ongoing professional development to sharpen clinical competencies and stay current on evolving nursing regulations and evidence-based practices.
- Performance Improvement: Contribute actively to quality improvement initiatives, data collection, and process workflows to elevate clinical outcomes and overall care delivery.
Job Requirements & Qualifications
Experience
- Required: 0 to 2 years of professional experience in a clinical nursing role
Education, Licenses, and Certifications
- RN License: Active Registered Nurse (RN) State Licensure and/or Compact State Licensure required.
- BCLS: Basic Life Support certification required.
- ACLS: Advanced Cardiac Life Support certification preferred.
- PALS: Pediatric Advanced Life Support certification preferred.
- NRP: Neonatal Resuscitation Program certification preferred.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Core Nursing Process: Deep fundamental knowledge of clinical nursing practices, orthopedic care models, and the nursing process.
- Assessment & Communication: Proven ability to execute precise patient assessments and communicate critical clinical findings articulately across teams.
- Pharmacology: Highly proficient in safe medication calculation, administration, and side-effect profiling.
