PURPOSE:
Provide operating, maintenance, and monitoring services for Dairyland's remotely located hydro and combustion turbine generators (if applicable), including auxiliary equipment.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
This list is developed to demonstrate the level of duties normally performed by this classification and to develop a related wage rate. This classification will need to learn and qualify to be proficient in all these duties so that the person will become a Technician in two years or less. The list is not an all-encompassing list of duties.
- Operate and monitor combustion turbines, and hydro turbines generators (if applicable), including auxiliary equipment.
- Assist in writing and updating department job, operating, maintenance, safety and site emergency procedures.
- Provide feedback to the department manager on department activities, training requirements, and other issues of concern.
- Facilitate and support other DPC department activities. Ensure all involved are kept informed on issues of their concerns.
- Comply with all state and federal reporting and permit requirements.
- Support and enhance where possible the plant preventative/predictive maintenance effort, with ideas and suggestions for improved maintenance practice or operating procedure.
- Recommend and implement modifications that will enhance plant efficiency, reliability, or safety.
- Monitor, compile and complete daily activity and monthly reports including safety, environmental, performance and generation.
- Ensure all department maintenance manuals, operating manuals, equipment files, and drawings are maintained and updated.
- Authorize parts and material withdrawal from stock for daily and long-term work assignments.
- Coordinate site activities with purchasing and stores ensuring proper stocking and ordering of necessary parts and equipment.
- Purchase parts and materials locally with credit card and reconcile charges at the end of the month.
- Troubleshoot, repair, and maintain all generation equipment, including: Controls, electronics, electrical, mechanical, pollution, and safety equipment.
- Lead and assist contractor work for maintenance and capital improvement work.
- Communicates extensively with System Dispatch concerning operating capabilities and requirements.
- Train other workers in operation, maintenance and safety of site equipment.
- Develop, maintain and qualify other employees on qualification cards.
- Operate electrical equipment for substation, generators, and site auxiliaries.
- Safely work on energized equipment when necessary.
- Schedule all daily and weekly department activities, as a backup to the Foreperson.
- Perform lockout, tagout and switching safety duties. Provide facility tours as needed.
Works primarily at assigned cost center locations and will occasionally be temporarily transferred to other locations in conjunction with contractual provisions. Perform all other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education & Experience:
(Internal) Prefer Associate Degree in directly related field (such as electrical, mechanical, instrumentation or applicable power plant operations). Prefer experience in hydro, and/or combustion turbine stations.
(External) Associate Degree in directly related field (such as electrical, mechanical, instrumentation or applicable power plant operations) required. Prefer experience in hydro, and/or combustion turbine stations.
- Specific requirements (e.g. Instrument, Electrical or Mechanical experience, etc.) will be based upon total composition of team skills required to operate and maintain generation units as identified in posting.
Skills:
Demonstrated ability to use software similar to DPC’s including CMMS, e-mail, word processing and spreadsheet programs. Ability to interpret and use equipment drawings, design specifications, system descriptions, control instrumentation, safety procedures, and emergency response procedures. Ability to troubleshoot and problem solve independently and with others. Ability to work with metric tools, equipment, and drawings.
Physical Demands:
Position requires variable work hours and schedules established by operational needs. Sitting, standing, kneeling, crouching, crawling, twisting upper body, walking, bending, reaching, stretching, writing, hearing, speaking, seeing, fingering, gasping, climbing (including stairs, ladders, and use of mechanical lifting devices). Entry into confined spaces required. Occasionally working in areas of extreme noise with hearing protection. Pushing, pulling, lifting up to 50 pounds) and ability to wear protective equipment such as safety glasses, respirators, SCBA, etc. Requires use of personal/laptop computer, electronic control equipment, and general office equipment.
Other Job Characteristics:
Reside within an approximate 30-minute radius of the designated site (15-minute radius for Flambeau). Cellular telephone, or other telecommunications devices will be made available for response to operating needs. Works independently (often alone) and with others in a team environment. Requires periodic offsite maintenance/operations training. Position currently anticipated to require ability to adapt to schedule changes with starting times established by operational needs. Requires overtime response to unscheduled unit runs and problems.
NOTE: FLAMBEAU – The selected candidate must be able to access turbine entrance through 23 ¼ inch, 4 feet long pipe with rung steps.
