Job Summary
The Forrest County Tax Collector's Office is seeking a highly organized, detail-oriented professional to serve as our Tax Compliance Specialist. This position plays a critical role in ensuring the accuracy, integrity, and compliance of daily tax collection operations while supporting excellent customer service.
The successful candidate will possess exceptional analytical skills, advanced attention to detail, strong Microsoft Excel proficiency, and the ability to learn complex state laws and county procedures. This position reports directly to the Tax Collector and serves as a trusted resource in maintaining operational accuracy and accountability.
This is not a supervisory position.
Primary Responsibilities
- Audit daily tax collection transactions for accuracy and compliance.
- Review motor vehicle transactions to ensure proper tax calculations, registration requirements, and documentation.
- Verify correct tax district assignments for property tax transactions.
- Confirm that appropriate sales and/or use tax has been collected on motor vehicle purchases.
- Review tax assessments, registrations, and supporting documentation for completeness and accuracy.
- Identify discrepancies, calculation errors, policy violations, and incomplete documentation.
- Coordinate corrections with appropriate office personnel.
- Prepare detailed audit reports and maintain accurate records using Microsoft Excel and county software.
- Monitor compliance with Mississippi law, county policies, and office procedures.
- Assist with internal reporting and special projects assigned by the Tax Collector.
Additional Duties
In addition to audit responsibilities, this position will assist with daily office operations, including:
- Process incoming and outgoing mail transactions.
- Serving as a secondary clerk for Mobile Homes and Business Personal Property.
- Assisting with multi-line phone system, respond to customer inquiries, and route calls to the appropriate department.
- Providing support to other office functions as workload requires.
- Assisting the Tax Collector with research, reporting, process improvements, and special projects.
Qualifications Required
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
- Excellent attention to detail with a high level of accuracy.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Excellent organizational and time management abilities.
- Ability to analyze data and identify errors or inconsistencies.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment.
- Ability to learn and interpret Mississippi tax laws, regulations, and county policies.
- Ability to adapt to changing procedures and priorities.
- Ability to work independently while also contributing to a team environment.
Preferred
- Previous experience in a county Tax Collector, Tax Assessor, Chancery Clerk, Circuit Clerk, DMV, or other local or state government office.
- Experience processing motor vehicle titles, registrations, property taxes, or related tax transactions.
- Working knowledge of Mississippi motor vehicle laws, property tax procedures, or state and local tax regulations.
- Experience working with large datasets and spreadsheets.
- Experience working on government software, including the As400.
- Customer service experience.
