The Waltham Public Library wants to be the best public library in the world and that’s what sets us apart when we’re adding to our team. Waltham is a diverse city with a mixed socio-economic group of about 65,000 residents. We have a growing population of families with young children, 12% of our population are teens and 40% of our residents speak a language other than English at home. We’re seeking a friendly, adaptive, enthusiastic, service-oriented individual to help serve an urban community within a busy library setting. We're looking for someone who is self-motivated, cares about accuracy, and can handle stressful situations with grace and good humor. Customer service experience is highly valued.
Duties include: Working under the direction of the Head of the Circulation department. Responsible for assisting with collection development, readers’ advisory support, programming and outreach. Serve patrons by locating materials and information via all print and electronic resources, in person and on the telephone. Answer telephones, check items in and out, register patrons, maintain patron accounts and other general public service desk duties. Assist patrons in troubleshooting personal computers, library OPACs and various other types of electronic equipment. Respond to patrons’ questions and concerns. Interpret and enforce library policies; Refer patrons to other departments and institutions as appropriate. Perform other duties at the discretion of supervisors.
35 hours per week
Weekly schedule to include a minimum of one evening/week, plus a minimum of one Saturday and one Sunday per month, year-round.
Bachelor’s degree and at least one year experience working with staff and public in a tactful and courteous manner. Strong interest,comfort and kindness in working with the general public; Excellent computer and problem solving skills along with an active interest in new technologies and social media. Superior customer service skills. Ability to perform detailed work accurately and efficiently with a minimum of supervision. Strong oral and written communication skills. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 30 pounds. Must pass a pre-employment physical with drug and alcohol screening, a Criminal Offenders Record Information (CORI) and a background check. Selected candidate will be required to submit three written and signed letters of reference within one week of accepting a conditional offer. Letters may not be dated any older than two years. Preferred: Fluency in Spanish, Chinese, Haitian Creole or Portuguese; familiarity with III Sierra software, Microsoft Office and Google workspace.
