Position Overview
The Mental Health Counselor serves as a key member of the interdisciplinary treatment team, providing mental health-specific counseling services to clients in detox and residential substance use treatment who present with co-occurring mental health needs. This role works collaboratively with the client’s primary SUD counselor, psychiatric provider, case management team, and clinical leadership to support integrated care.
This position does not function as the client’s primary counselor or caseload holder. Instead, the Mental Health Counselor provides targeted mental health counseling, co-occurring support, family sessions when clinically indicated, mental health-focused groups, treatment team collaboration, treatment plan collaboration, and documentation of mental health-specific services within the clinical record.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide individual mental health counseling to clients with co-occurring mental health needs within a detox and residential SUD treatment setting.
- Facilitate mental health-focused and co-occurring disorder groups as assigned.
- Provide family counseling or family support sessions when clinically indicated and appropriate.
- Collaborate with primary SUD counselors, psychiatric providers, nursing, case management, and clinical leadership to support integrated treatment.
- Document mental health-specific counseling services clearly and timely in the Electronic Health Record.
- Participate in multidisciplinary treatment team meetings and provide clinical input related to mental health symptoms, treatment needs, progress, and referrals.
- Support clients in developing coping skills, emotional regulation skills, insight into mental health symptoms, and strategies to support recovery stability.
- Identify concerns requiring psychiatric review, higher level of care, external referral, or additional clinical intervention.
- Maintain services within the scope of professional license/credential and in accordance with agency policy, regulatory standards, and ethical guidelines.
- Contribute to trauma-informed, culturally responsive, and client-centered clinical programming.
- Attend clinical supervision, case consultation, and team meetings as required.
- Assist clinical team in completing biopsychosocial assessments as needed; updating and coordinating treatment plans to incorporate
Qualifications
- Active New Jersey mental health license required: LAC, LPC, LSW, LCSW, LAMFT, or LMFT
- Experience with co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders preferred.
- Experience in detox, residential, inpatient, or behavioral health treatment settings preferred.
- Strong clinical documentation, communication, and organization skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary treatment team.
- Comfort working with clients experiencing anxiety, depression, trauma responses, mood instability, emotional dysregulation, grief/loss, and other mental health concerns commonly seen in SUD treatment.
- Commitment to trauma-informed, ethical, and evidence-based care.

Pay: $65,000.00 - $75,000.00 per year
