Position Overview
We are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented SMT Programmer/Engineer to support and optimize Surface Mount Technology (SMT) production operations. This role is responsible for programming, modifying, and troubleshooting SMT equipment to ensure efficient, high-quality printed circuit board (PCB) assembly. The ideal candidate will work closely with engineering and production teams to improve processes, reduce downtime, and maintain high manufacturing standards.
Key Responsibilities
Programming & Setup
- Generate, optimize, and maintain programs for SMT equipment, including:
- Pick-and-place machines (Mycronic or similar)
- Paste printing systems
- Solder Paste Inspection (SPI)
- Automated Optical Inspection (AOI)
- Utilize BOM and XY data to create accurate machine programs
- Create and modify component profiles
- Develop and optimize solder paste and reflow oven profiles – will be a plus
- Configure machine settings and maintain SMT assembly folders and documentation
Process Optimization & Troubleshooting
- Analyze production data to improve SMT process performance and yields
- Troubleshoot programming and process issues impacting quality or throughput
- Conduct first-article inspections and support new product introductions
- Provide technical support to production teams to minimize downtime
Gerber & Data Management
- Modify Gerber files using CAM software
- Prepare load sheets for pick-and-place machines
- Ensure compliance with ESD and quality control protocols
SMT Equipment Support
- Operate and support SMT line equipment, including:
- Pick N Place Machine (Mycronic experience preferred)
- AOI
- SPI
- Automated X-ray Inspection (AXI) systems
- Assist with diagnosing and resolving equipment malfunctions
Continuous Improvement
- Demonstrate flexibility and willingness to learn additional SMT equipment and processes
- Stay current with SMT technologies and industry best practices
Qualifications
- Previous experience programming and supporting SMT equipment in a manufacturing environment
- Strong understanding of SMT processes, PCB assembly, and electronics manufacturing workflows
- Experience with Mycronic equipment preferred
- Familiarity with SPI, AOI, and AXI systems
- Ability to read and interpret BOMs, XY data, and Gerber files
- Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and documentation skills
- Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced production environment
Compensation & Benefits
- Hourly pay: $25 – $35, based on experience and technical skill level
