Position Summary
Napoleon Community Schools is seeking a dependable, skilled, and safety-conscious Maintenance Person to join our Facilities Department. This position is responsible for maintaining school buildings, grounds, equipment, and systems to ensure a safe, clean, and functional learning environment for students, staff, and the community.
The selected candidate will be placed at the Maintenance I, II, or III level based on qualifications, certifications, experience, and demonstrated skills. Similar school district maintenance classifications commonly distinguish levels by the complexity of duties, trade certifications, and ability to work independently.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Maintenance Person I
- Perform routine building and grounds maintenance.
- Complete basic repairs involving doors, windows, locks, flooring, furniture, and fixtures.
- Assist with plumbing, electrical, HVAC, carpentry, and painting projects.
- Conduct preventive maintenance inspections.
- Assist with event setup and teardown.
- Maintain tools, equipment, and work areas.
- Perform snow removal, lawn care, and grounds upkeep.
- Follow all district safety procedures and regulations.
Maintenance Person II
In addition to Maintenance I duties:
- Perform skilled maintenance and repair work in one or more trades (electrical, plumbing, carpentry, HVAC, painting, or mechanical systems).
- Diagnose and troubleshoot facility issues.
- Read and interpret plans, diagrams, and technical manuals.
- Coordinate projects and provide guidance to Maintenance I staff as assigned.
- Maintain records of repairs and maintenance activities.
Maintenance Person III
In addition to Maintenance I and II duties:
- Perform advanced and specialized maintenance, repair, and installation work.
- Serve as a lead worker on major maintenance projects.
- Troubleshoot complex building systems and equipment.
- Train and mentor maintenance personnel.
- Coordinate contractors and vendors as assigned.
Assist with facility planning, inspections, and long-term maintenance projects.

Qualifications
Maintenance Person I
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Experience in general maintenance, construction, custodial work, landscaping, or related fields preferred.
- Ability to operate hand and power tools safely.
- Valid Michigan driver’s license.
Maintenance Person II
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Three or more years of maintenance or skilled trade experience preferred.
- Demonstrated proficiency in one or more building trades.
- Relevant certifications preferred.
Maintenance Person III
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Five or more years of advanced maintenance or skilled trade experience preferred.
- Trade certification, licensure, or specialized training strongly preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to independently manage complex maintenance projects.
Physical Requirements
- Frequent standing, walking, climbing, bending, lifting, and carrying.
- Ability to lift up to 75 pounds with or without assistance.
- Ability to work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Ability to safely operate maintenance equipment and vehicles.
