Responsibilities:
- Welcomes and establishes good rapport with patients.
- Initiates patient evaluation and accurately documents the chief complaint, history of present illness, review of systems, current ocular and general medications, and all other pertinent ocular findings in accordance with compliance guidelines.
- Informs and educates patients on the purpose of tests being performed and how they will be affected during those tests.
- Performs pre-exam testing which includes visual acuity assessment (including pinhole), confrontational visual field testing, assess extraocular muscles, pupillary evaluation, tonometry, pupillary dilation, Optical Coherence Tomography, Fundus Photography and all other patient services as requested by the physician including special tests such as color vision screening (Ishihara) .
- Assists in the efficient movement of patients through the clinic flow.
- Rooms patients based on their correct scheduled appointment.
- Has working knowledge of eye terminology, anatomy, pathologies, and ocular pharmacology.
- Thoroughly understands and follows proper triage protocol.
- Performs opening and closing duties on clinic days.
- Ensures clinic/exam rooms are kept tidy.
- Ensures stocking of each exam room with necessary supplies as needed.
- Order back office supplies and keep inventory of stock.
- Be a proficient user of Electronic Medical Records (EMR) system and Practice Management (PM) system.
- Appropriately schedule patients for follow-up appointments.
- Have familiarity with patient insurances for patient coverage.
- Scribe for patient encounters in the EMR.
- Electronically prescribes medications as directed by the physician.
- Maintain patient refills under the supervision of the physician.
- Submit prior authorization requests for patient medications as needed per patient insurance plans.
- Maintain accurate electronic health records (EHR) and patient documentation.
- Assists with proper instillation of eye drops.
- Properly preps the patient and room for procedures such as, but not limited to intraocular injections and laser.
- Assists the physician with injections and procedures as needed.
- Educate patients on eye care, medications, and post-operative care instructions.
- Consent patients for procedures such as, but not limited to intraocular injections, laser, and surgery.
- Use the autoclave to properly sterilize instruments as needed.
- Follows guidelines recommended by OSHA.
- Ability to handle confidential matters and adhere to HIPAA guidelines.
- Professional attitude and appearance.
- Provide support and assistance to other members of the healthcare team as needed.
- Maintain regular attendance and punctuality.
- Performs all other duties as assigned.
Requirements:
The ideal candidate will have strong customer service skills and people skills to provide the highest level of care for our patients, as well as:
- High school degree or equivalent (Required)
- Bilingual - Spanish (Required)
- Prior experience in ophthalmology or retina as ophthalmic technician (Preferred)
- Certification as an Ophthalmic Technician (COA, COT, or COMT) (Preferred)
- Proficient computer skills
- Strong organizational skills
- Strong interpersonal skills with a nurturing and supportive attitude
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
- Proficiency with electronic health records and diagnostic equipment
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment
- High level of attention to detail and accuracy
