Position Summary
The Laboratory Operations Manager serves as the operational backbone of the laboratory, ensuring seamless coordination between laboratory personnel, administrative staff, vendors, and external partners. This role focuses on business operations, workflow management, logistics, inventory, documentation, software implementation, and continuous process improvement rather than performing laboratory testing.
Responsibilities
- Oversee the day-to-day operational workflow of the laboratory.
- Coordinate communication between laboratory staff, billing, customer service, logistics, and management.
- Manage laboratory inventory, supplies, equipment ordering, and vendor relationships.
- Track inventory levels and maintain appropriate stock of laboratory consumables.
- Coordinate specimen logistics, shipping supplies, and courier operations.
- Assist with implementation, setup, maintenance, and optimization of laboratory software platforms, including LIS and operational systems.
- Develop and improve workflows to increase efficiency and reduce operational bottlenecks.
- Maintain operational documentation, SOPs, forms, and internal records.
- Collect, organize, and analyze operational data and prepare management reports.
- Monitor laboratory KPIs, turnaround times, inventory usage, and operational metrics.
- Assist with regulatory documentation and quality management initiatives.
- Coordinate onboarding of new operational systems and equipment.
- Work closely with laboratory leadership on special projects and process improvement initiatives.
- Support scheduling and coordination of laboratory operations as needed.
- Ensure operational compliance with company policies and regulatory requirements.
Qualifications
Required
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience.
- 3+ years of operations, laboratory operations, healthcare operations, or project management experience.
- Strong organizational and multitasking skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, especially Excel.
- Experience implementing or managing software platforms and business systems.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple priorities.
Preferred
- Experience in a clinical laboratory, molecular diagnostics, healthcare, or biotechnology environment.
- Familiarity with Laboratory Information Systems (LIS).
- Experience with inventory management and purchasing.
- Knowledge of CLIA, CAP, or other laboratory regulatory standards.
- Experience with workflow automation or process improvement initiatives.
