DEFINITION
Under general supervision; a Juvenile Detention Officer is responsible for the security of the facility. The detention officer is responsible for the custody and control of detainees.
EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED
- Responsible for custody and control of detainees, their physical movement, and all of their needs. For the security of the physical plant, records, logs, keys, and all property of the Authority and detainees.
- Operates control room, completes facility logs and records.
- Conducts inspections and searches of detainees and cells as needed. Enforce contraband control and detainee rules.
- Observes detainees for abnormal conditions and corrects situations immediately. Reports any criminal intelligence to supervisor.
- Inspects physical plant and kitchen for cleanliness, maintenance problems and unsafe conditions, and takes appropriate action to correct. Inspects cleaning materials and supplies that enter and leave cells.
- Coordinate detainees for sick call, doctor and dental visits, church services, and accompanies nurse on medication rounds.
- Logs all visitors, conducts security checks and searches as necessary, and observes detainee visitation.
- Ensures that all detainees have routine access to showers, distributes hygiene products, clean clothing, clean linens and clean bedding.
- Searches, supervises and directly oversees all detainee activities.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
REQUIRED SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES
- Skill in basic typing, report writing, application of security techniques, maintaining security of detainees, and application of principles of supervision.
- Knowledge of inter‑departmental correspondence, departmental policies, rules and regulations, security techniques, records, and detention operation procedures.
- Ability to gain respect and cooperation of others, to remain alert and vigilant, exercise initiative and independent judgment, understand and follow oral and written instructions, and deal tactfully with others.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $18.40 - $20.19 per hour
Expected hours: No less than 40 per week
