Job Summary
The Director of Correctional Medicine Services is responsible for all administrative and operational duties regarding the Smith County Jail Medical facilities. The position ensures contractual compliance, as well as compliance with institutional, professional, regulatory, governmental standards and laws.
This position is considered “Essential” and assigned to an employee whose presence is essential during a declared emergency status, but who cannot leave until released by supervisor and must return to work as usual under routine operations after the emergency status has ended.
Major Responsibilities/Duties/Critical Tasks
Oversee and implement process and procedure enhancements, requiring a combination of existing and acquired proficiency with Texas Commission on Jail Standards and state and federal regulations.

Direct the preparation of and delivers regular reports on quality, financials, utilization, and operations within the Smith County jail facilities.

Identifies opportunities for operational improvements and directs implementation of said improvements.

Provide excellent customer service to both internal and external customers.

Serve as liaison between Smith County Jail and The University of Texas Health Science Center at Tyler’s Administration and Operational leadership.

Ensure compliance with institutional, professional, regulatory, and governmental standards and laws.

Ensure full scope of operations (including personnel, maintenance, and operations, etc.) are carried out in accordance with contractual obligations and budgetary limitations.

Direct procurement of all medical and pharmaceutical supplies necessary to maintain operations in all three Smith County jail facilities in accordance with state and institutional regulations.

Provides nursing coverage to meet staffing needs.

Completes other duties as assigned.
Required Education/Experience
Bachelor's degree.

Five (5) years of relevant experience required.

May accept a combination of education and experience.
Preferred Education and Experience
Master’s degree in related field.

5+ years of experience in corrections/criminal justice healthcare preferred.
-
5+ years of experience in Healthcare Administration preferred.

Nursing experience highly preferred.
Required Certifications/Licenses
CPR certified or will receive certification within two (2) months of hire. (Must maintain certification in first aid/CPR/AED throughout the entire appointment.)

Has Texas Driver’s License or will receive within two (2) months of hire.

Additional Information
The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
