Role Overview
The Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) is responsible for providing comprehensive psychiatric evaluation, diagnosis, and medication management within a behavioral health setting. This role plays a central part in delivering integrated, evidence-based care while ensuring compliance with state regulations, payer requirements, and organizational clinical standards.
The PMHNP serves as a key clinical authority, supporting treatment planning, improving patient outcomes, and ensuring safe and effective medication practices across the organization.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct comprehensive psychiatric evaluations, including diagnostic assessments, mental status examinations, and risk assessments.
- Develop and manage individualized treatment plans, including prescribing and monitoring psychiatric medications in accordance with state scope of practice and collaborative agreements where required.
- Provide ongoing medication management, including dosage adjustments, side effect monitoring, and patient education.
- Collaborate closely with therapists, social workers, nurses, and residential staff to ensure coordinated and holistic care delivery.
- Maintain accurate, timely, and compliant clinical documentation aligned with HIPAA, payer, and regulatory requirements.
- Monitor patient progress and treatment effectiveness, making data-driven clinical decisions.
- Provide consultation and clinical guidance to care teams regarding psychiatric and medication-related considerations.
- Participate in case reviews, multidisciplinary meetings, and clinical quality improvement initiatives.
- Ensure compliance with prescribing regulations, including controlled substance management and documentation standards.

Required Qualifications
- Master’s or Doctoral Degree in Nursing (MSN or DNP) from an accredited institution
- Board Certification as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP-BC)
- Active, unrestricted Nurse Practitioner license in the state of practice
- Minimum of 2–5 years of experience in psychiatric or behavioral health settings
Required Certifications and Compliance (U.S.)
- Active NP license in good standing with the State Board of Nursing
- Board Certification as PMHNP-BC through ANCC
- DEA Registration (required for prescribing controlled substances)
- Controlled Substance Registration (state-specific, where applicable)
- National Provider Identifier (NPI) number
- Credentialing eligibility with Medicaid, Medicare, and commercial insurance providers
- HIPAA Certification and compliance training
- BLS/CPR Certification (as required by employer or setting)
- Ability to pass background check, credential verification, and required healthcare screenings
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in residential, outpatient, or community mental health settings
- Familiarity with evidence-based psychiatric treatment approaches and integrated care models
- Experience working with diverse or high-acuity populations
- Prior involvement in program development or clinical leadership
