Position Title: Diesel Technician
Department: Fleet Maintenance
Reports To: Fleet Maintenance Manager / Shop Supervisor

Position Summary
Mustang Expediting is seeking a skilled and dependable Diesel Technician to join our Fleet Maintenance team. This position is responsible for inspecting, diagnosing, repairing, and performing preventative maintenance on Class 8 commercial vehicles, trailers, and related equipment to ensure our fleet operates safely, efficiently, and in compliance with DOT and FMCSA regulations.
The ideal candidate is safety-focused, detail-oriented, and capable of working independently while maintaining high standards of workmanship and professionalism.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Perform preventative maintenance inspections and scheduled services on commercial diesel trucks and trailers.
Diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and electronic systems.
Troubleshoot engine, transmission, suspension, steering, braking, fuel, cooling, and exhaust systems.
Inspect, repair, and maintain air brake systems.
Perform wheel-end maintenance, including hub and bearing service, lubrication, and replacement.
Diagnose and repair Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) systems and aftertreatment components, including:
Diesel Particulate Filters (DPF)
Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR)
Regeneration systems
Read and interpret diagnostic trouble codes using computerized diagnostic equipment.
Perform electrical troubleshooting, including lighting systems, wiring harnesses, sensors, and charging systems.
Complete repairs according to manufacturer specifications and company maintenance standards.
Inspect vehicles to ensure compliance with DOT and FMCSA regulations.
Accurately document inspections, repairs, labor hours, and parts used.
Communicate repair recommendations and equipment status with supervisors.
Coordinate repairs requiring outside vendors when necessary.
Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work environment.
Follow all OSHA safety regulations and company safety policies.
Respond to emergency repair situations as needed.
Perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education
High school diploma or GED required.
Completion of a diesel or heavy equipment technology program from a trade school or technical college preferred.
Experience
Minimum of 2–3 years of hands-on experience maintaining and repairing commercial diesel vehicles.
Experience working on Class 8 trucks preferred.
Fleet maintenance experience strongly preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Strong understanding of diesel engine systems.
Knowledge of air brake systems.
Experience servicing wheel-end assemblies.
Familiarity with DEF, DPF, and SCR emissions systems.
Ability to interpret diagnostic fault codes.
Basic electrical troubleshooting skills.
Understanding of preventative maintenance programs.
Familiarity with DOT/FMCSA inspection requirements (49 CFR Part 396 preferred).
Ability to prioritize multiple repairs while maintaining quality workmanship.
Strong organizational and communication skills.
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
Commitment to workplace safety and quality.
Licenses and Certifications
Valid driver's license required.
Commercial Driver's License (CDL) preferred.
ASE Medium/Heavy Truck Certifications preferred.
Air Brake Certification preferred.
Physical Requirements
The employee must regularly:
Lift up to 75 pounds.
Stand, walk, bend, kneel, squat, climb, and crawl for extended periods.
Use hand and power tools safely.
Work underneath commercial vehicles.
Reach overhead and work in confined spaces.
Perform repetitive hand and arm movements.
Possess sufficient vision, hearing, and manual dexterity to safely diagnose and repair equipment.

Work Environment
Work is performed primarily in a maintenance shop with occasional outdoor work in varying weather conditions. Employees may be exposed to:
Moving mechanical parts
Diesel fuel and exhaust
Oils, grease, and cleaning solvents
Loud noise
Temperature extremes
Dust and dirt
Appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) must be worn at all times.
