Job purpose
The Electrical Designer/Detailer develops accurate, build-ready electrical drawing packages and documentation that support project execution, panel fabrication, field installation, commissioning, and long-term service. Using SolidWorks Electrical and approved drafting tools, this role creates schematics, panel layouts, wiring diagrams, terminal and cable plans, bills of material, and as-built documentation while coordinating closely with Electrical Operations, Controls, Mechanical Engineering, Project Management, Production, Field Service, and suppliers to ensure complete, consistent, and on-time releases.
Duties and responsibilities
Electrical drafting and detailing
- Create and revise complete electrical drawing packages, including schematics, one-line diagrams, power and control circuits, panel and enclosure layouts, wiring diagrams, terminal plans, cable schedules, device location drawings, and interconnection drawings.
- Develop drawings from project scopes, customer requirements, mechanical designs, controls requirements, field measurements, vendor documentation, and approved redline markups.
- Maintain device tags, wire numbers, cable identifiers, terminal numbers, cross-references, drawing references, revision records, drawing status, project files, and naming conventions in accordance with company standards.
- Produce customer approval drawings, panel fabrication packages, machine wiring packages, field installation drawings, and final as-built documentation.
- Create and maintain electrical symbols, macros, templates, title blocks, and reusable component libraries within SolidWorks Electrical.
- Review drawings for completeness, accuracy, consistency, manufacturability, proper cross-referencing, and conflicts before release.
- Revise and update legacy electrical drawings, standard equipment packages, and existing customer documentation.
- Create and maintain accurate bills of material for control panels, machine wiring, field installation, and commissioning materials, including applicable ERP/MRP entries and releases.
Project coordination and support
- Coordinate with the Electrical Operations Manager, controls personnel, and panel shop to ensure drawings reflect approved component selections, PLC I/O requirements, network devices, safety circuits, and shop wiring practices.
- Coordinate with mechanical designers to confirm control panel locations, operator stations, motors, sensors, field devices, cable routing, and equipment interfaces.
- Work with project managers to establish drafting priorities, estimate completion time, communicate progress, and identify drawing-related risks or missing information.
- Answer drawing questions from the panel shop, Production, installation, commissioning, and service personnel, and incorporate approved shop or field changes into the drawings.
- Participate in design reviews and quality checks and serve as a second set of eyes to identify errors, omissions, and coordination issues before drawings are released.
- Communicate with suppliers to obtain component drawings, specifications, dimensional information, and current product availability.
- Support troubleshooting and service activities by reviewing electrical documentation and updating drawings after approved changes are completed.
- Field-verify existing equipment, dimensions, device locations, and wiring when required; travel to customer sites on an occasional basis.
- Follow company safety and quality procedures and prepare drawings in accordance with applicable company standards, customer specifications, UL 508A, NFPA 70, NFPA 79, and other project requirements.
Qualifications
Required qualifications
- Associate degree, technical certificate, completed coursework, or equivalent practical experience in electrical drafting, electrical technology, industrial controls, CAD, engineering technology, or a related field.
- Proficiency with SolidWorks Electrical or a comparable electrical CAD platform.
- Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, ladder diagrams, wiring diagrams, panel layouts, equipment plans, component datasheets, and technical manuals.
- Working knowledge of industrial control components and systems, including PLCs, HMIs, VFDs, motor starters, disconnects, power supplies, relays, safety devices, sensors, terminal blocks, and industrial network components.
- Experience developing accurate bills of material and working within an ERP/MRP system.
- Strong attention to detail, analytical skills, and the ability to identify discrepancies between drawings, specifications, and equipment.
- Clear and professional written and verbal communication skills.
- Effective time management, organization, and the ability to balance priorities and requests from multiple departments in a fast-paced environment.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office applications, including Excel, Word, and Outlook.
- Ability to work independently, follow established standards, accept direction, and collaborate as part of a cross-functional team.
Preferred qualifications
- Two or more years of electrical drafting or detailing experience.
- Experience with AutoCAD Electrical, UL 508A, NFPA 70/NEC, NFPA 79, industrial machine control panel documentation, custom machinery, food processing equipment, washdown environments, or OEM manufacturing.
- Ability to accurately use a tape measure and other basic measuring tools.
Working conditions
This position is primarily indoors in an office environment and includes extended periods of computer-intensive work. The employee will periodically work in the manufacturing plant, panel shop, and equipment assembly areas where required personal protective equipment must be worn. Occasional travel to customer sites may be required.

- Drive a vehicle and travel by car or plane when jobsite verification is required.
