Science is Elementary is a nonprofit organization providing high-quality, hands-on science education to underserved children ages 4-7. We reach 60,000+ children annually through partnerships with libraries, schools, YMCAs, and community centers across multiple states, making early science education accessible to communities that need it most.
Position Overview
Science is Elementary (SiE) is seeking energetic, engaging science educators to inspire students in underserved elementary schools. Our ideal staff member has an undergraduate or graduate degree in a STEM field with experience and training in elementary pedagogy, and is passionate about science education.
Our curriculum teaches scientific thinking through hands-on experiments and engineering challenges, with a focus on the physical sciences. It promotes deep understanding of basic science concepts and encourages creativity and teamwork in open ended problem solving. Students show gains of 55%-80% in conceptual learning and increased positive attitudes to science.
We work with several hundred students every month (Transitional Kindergarten through 3rd grade) in school districts across the Bay Area. To learn more about our program, visit www.scienceiselementary.org.
This position reports to our Director of Curriculum. This is an in-person position at various sites around the Bay Area.
Key Responsibilities
- Learn and deliver a variety of lesson plans for up to two grade levels in classroom settings.
- Train and supervise volunteers working in classrooms.
- Be flexible and friendly with classroom teachers, students, volunteers and staff members.
- Maintain materials for lessons.
- Transport lesson materials to and from the school sites.
- Attend monthly staff meetings.
- Must be punctual, arriving at least 30 minutes prior to the start of each session.
- Create a safe, positive, and enjoyable environment for learning in the classroom.
Qualifications
Required
- College degree (STEM major preferred).
- Classroom experience at the preschool or early elementary level.
- Possess positive classroom management skills.
- Strong oral communication skills.
- Be patient and flexible.
- Be willing to work varied hours, at multiple school sites, based on program schedule.
- Be able to lift 20 lb.
Preferred
- Background in early childhood education or STEM fields
- Bilingual skills
Compensation
$35 per hour, for up to 10 hours a week
