Job Overview
We are seeking an experienced and self-motivated Road Service Diesel Mechanic specializing in Transport Refrigeration (Reefer) Units. In this role, you will operate a mobile service truck to diagnose, service, and repair diesel engines and refrigeration systems on commercial trailers directly on the road or at customer locations. This role requires excellent troubleshooting skills, autonomy, and the ability to work in varying weather conditions to keep our clients' cold-chain logistics moving safely.
Key Responsibilities
- Mobile Diagnostics & Repair: Travel to breakdowns or fleet yards to troubleshoot and repair diesel engines and transport refrigeration units (Carrier, Thermo King, etc.).
- Refrigeration System Service: Diagnose and repair reefer-specific components, including compressors, evaporators, condensers, expansion valves, and electrical control boards.
- Diesel Engine Maintenance: Perform mechanical repairs on small diesel engines powering the reefer units, including fuel systems, belts, alternators, and cooling systems.
- Electrical Troubleshooting: Read wiring schematics to diagnose 12V DC systems, microprocessors, and sensor malfunctions.
- Emergency Roadside Response: Safely position service vehicles on highways or jobsites following DOT safety regulations to perform emergency repairs.
Required Qualifications
- Experience: Minimum of 2–3 years of hands-on experience as a diesel mechanic, specifically working on Thermo King or Carrier refrigeration units.
◦ Valid Driver’s License with a clean driving record (CDL Class A or B preferred).
◦ EPA Section 608 or 609 Certification (Type II or Universal) for handling refrigerants.
- Technical Skills: Strong proficiency in electrical troubleshooting, welding/brazing, and utilizing digital diagnostic software.
- Physical Requirements: Ability to lift up to 75 lbs, climb ladders, and work outdoors in extreme weather conditions (heat, cold, rain, snow).
- Tools: Must possess a comprehensive set of personal hand tools and pneumatic tools (specialty diagnostic equipment and service truck provided).
Preferred Skills & Certifications
- Factory training certifications from Thermo King or Carrier Transicold.
- Experience with trailer chassis maintenance (brakes, lights, air systems).
