Job Summary
The Burn Shop Inspector is responsible for inspecting steel plate components produced through CNC plasma and oxy-fuel cutting operations to ensure compliance with customer drawings, work orders, and company quality standards. This role performs dimensional inspections, burn quality checks, bevel verification, and documentation review to confirm that parts produced in the burn shop meet required tolerances and specifications.
The Burn Shop Inspector works closely with burn table operators, production supervisors, and the Quality Department to identify discrepancies, maintain traceability, and ensure high-quality steel plate components are delivered to downstream operations and customers.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform dimensional inspections of burned steel parts produced from CNC plasma and oxy-fuel cutting tables.
- Verify parts meet required tolerances, dimensions, and specifications based on shop drawings and work orders.
- Inspect cut edges for burn quality including slag, taper, edge finish, and cut consistency.
- Verify bevel angles and weld preparation edges when required for fabrication or welding operations.
- Confirm correct plate thickness, material grade, and heat number traceability.
- Review work orders, drawings, and shop paperwork to confirm accuracy before and after burning operations.
- Ensure part numbers, job numbers, and material identification match the production documentation.
- Verify burn layouts and nests correspond with approved drawings and CNC programs.
- Maintain accurate inspection records and quality documentation for production orders.
- Perform in-process inspections during burning operations to verify quality standards are maintained.
- Conduct spot checks of parts produced by burn table operators to confirm dimensional accuracy and burn quality.
- Identify nonconforming parts and notify production leadership or the Quality Department when discrepancies occur.
- Assist with investigations and corrective actions related to burn quality issues or dimensional discrepancies.
- Ensure proper marking of parts including heat numbers, part numbers, and identification markings to maintain material traceability.
- Verify steel grades and materials match the requirements listed on job documentation and customer specifications.
- Work closely with burn table operators and supervisors to resolve dimensional or quality concerns.
- Provide guidance regarding tolerances, burn quality expectations, and inspection requirements.
- Ensure inspection tools and measuring devices are properly maintained and calibrated.
- Follow all company safety policies and wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) when working in the production environment.
- Maintain a clean and organized inspection area within the burn shop.
- Perform other job-related duties as assigned to support production and quality objectives.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Technical training in quality inspection, welding inspection, or manufacturing preferred.
- 2–5 years of experience in a manufacturing or steel fabrication environment preferred.
- Experience in burn shop, plate processing, or CNC cutting environments strongly preferred.
- Ability to read and interpret fabrication drawings, blueprints, and work orders.
- Proficiency with measuring tools such as tape measures, calipers, squares, and gauges.
- Working knowledge of steel plate grades and cutting processes (plasma and oxy-fuel).
- Basic computer skills for inspection documentation.
Working Conditions
While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly exposed to work near moving mechanical parts. The employee is occasionally exposed to outdoor weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
